Thoughts on vessel?

Really good points everyone .. I was reading an article that Vessel is paying $7 to the creator for every subscription that move over from YouTube. I.e. if Michelle Phan has 7 million subscribers .. and only 2 million moves across .. does this mean $14 million? Surely there is a cap to the amount.

But the real question is .. what will this Vessel launch do to small youTubers like us? I like to think that people will still be YouTubing .. and potentially, if the big players are moving more and more to Vessel .. then there is more chance for us to excel?

What do you guys think?

Out of curiousity I applied when it was still closed and no videos live. I think the reply was that they want channels with more subs and channels aiming at an English audience. Mine is like 50/50 German/non German audience (despite all content being in English). Maybe it also has something to do with their ability to sell ads. German audience usually should get more local ads and not e.g. about a US product which they can't even buy.

By the way, I think if you sign up before the end of today you can get Vessel for free for a year. Early adopter bonus.

They just gave one year free memberships to people. I wonder if they don't have a good early adoption rate for paid memberships as consumers. however from a creator perspective they are still being very selective as to who they allow to add content to the website.

That was my first thought, too. It's like when a subscription MMO game becomes Free2Play after just a few months. :)

Right now I also really don't know why I should be so crazy about the videos there to watch them a few days earlier.

Ellen just made a post on her Facebook about Vessel which made me want to see if anyone here was talking about it.

Honestly I think this is great for smaller channels, just like what Mel said. I mean with YouTube losing some of their "larger stars" it makes room for newer people to fill those spaces. I think the site is an interesting concept, but I would never pay to watch something I could get for free a few days later.

I've never been a man of giving unfair advantages. However some people want to support the youtubers they love.

I don't think that YouTube will lose the big stars just like that. It only means that they show some of their videos 3 or more days in advance behind closed doors on Vessel. Then they put them on YouTube. Of course, if Vessel becomes really big it could mean that some of their videos will get less views on YT because people have seen them on Vessel already but it's a long way.

We already have the "under 301+" club on YouTube.... we don't need to give them any more ammo :P I think it's daft, people will probably copy and post it on youtube early out of spite anyhow.

You are astute when you realize that when people leave, it improves the chances for those that stay. To use a couple examples, everybody was complaining about Nintendo's MCN and they won't be won't Nintendo content anymore. Well, that means that for those that decide to keep doing Nintendo videos, they have less competition to worry about.

That being said, larger YouTube stars are not leaving YouTube. They know where their bread is buttered. They are only going to Vessel to get a little jam on top of the butter.

As for paying for early access to content, I'm with you. 3 days isn't a big enough exclusive to want me to pay.
