Why do new channels monetize?

I made one video monitized just to say I made money but I'm not going to monetize until I have a steady 500 viewer count per video rate or I feel like my content is worthy of making people wait 5 seconds for my money. But as anybody that really cares about youtube knows its not for the love of money its the love of youtube and if you are only going for that youtube money and fame you aren't going to make it.

I put ads up because I wanted to put ads up. If there was any chance of having a little income from my hobby I was going to take it. It doesn't even come close to offsetting the cost of the hobby, but that's not why I YouTube. I do it for fun. Any cash that comes in goes right back into it. And then some.

I don't monetize for the reason @notfunnyentertainment and other have said, but I definitely do hear the other side's good points. When I hit 50 subs, I promised myself that I would start monetizing when I hit 100. (Getting close!) I know I will get just pennies, but monetizing will make me feel like a YouTuber grown up.

I've been advising this to every new or aspiring YouTuber in my market; however, the majority ignore it and monetize instantly to get paid for those 500 monthly views. Hopefully, after I finish my next video outlining how much a single view is actually worth after factoring in the majority of views that are never counted as monetized views, youtube's cut, the network's cut and channel expenses, more will listen.

Also those starting YT for the money will re-think it after I show my $2.87 hourly wage from the 1st year of monetization that had about 8 million views or so. Those mobile and tablet views of 73% last month have just continued to rise killing me. I am at 23% of my total views actually being monetized views for the last 30 days. Good thing I'm happy with being poor, but enjoying something I do for money cause if I was in YT for the money, I'd be long gone.

I didn't monetize for the first 5 years. Didn't have monetizable content anyway!

I think it's smart to get your viewers used to the ads right away so it won't be "you're selling out" or "what's with the ads" later on. Also, you never know when you're going to get a viral video (not that I've ever had one lol), and you don't want to be scrambling to get adsense and ads going after the fact. Of course it's one of those things where you just have to do what feels right for you, your channel and your viewers.

I wouldn't monetize unless I would be getting a few dollars a video, even then I would try and aim higher, the main reason behind most new channels monetizing is they hear of other successful YouTubers (PewDiePie etc.) and think they can get those 6 digit cash amounts a day.

I encourage the same perspective. When starting a new channel, minimize ads until you are gaining some sort of traction. You don't have to monetize every video. Pick and choose the best performing videos and monetize those.
I don't even monetise my best performing 1s... mainly because I don't know they are until it's too late to monetise them xD either way I wouldn't make much, I don't think it's worth the risk of people clicking off or worse click bombing the ads on an AdSense account, for the chance I'll get a few cents that I can't even get paid because of a threshold.
