Why do new channels monetize?

I put this in the strategy forum because I do think the decision to monetize does play a factor in growing your channel, especially when you are starting out.

The way I look at is this; if you are new and want to grow your viewership and following, why would you put any barriers up to that....including an ad to start your video? Most of the people who hit your video or channel for the first time are giving you a very limited time to see if they like your content or not. I know I've clicked on numerous channels from the forums here and have clicked off when an ad starts because I simply don't feel like I want to watch it....even for the 5 second click off option.

Now I'm not saying don't ever monetize....obviously making money doing video's is likely a dream and goal for most of us here if we are being truthful. But when you have 4 subs and 30 views per video....really? What exactly are you gaining here?

Anyway, I thought it was a good discussion to have and would love to hear everyones opinions on this topic? Does it hurt to monetize too early? When is a good time to monetize...is it avg view count....number of subs...etc?

This question pops up time and time again by so many different people :p

The way the internet, and society works today, we EXPECT advertisements in a sense.
If we were to watch 10 videos on someone's channel and there were no advertisements, it would "feel" weird, it's not in our culture to have that much freedom as such.

That saying, I do see where you are coming from.
HOWEVER..

You never know when a video could go viral, if it isn't monetised before it is viral, you gain nothing, and have lost out on a lot of money!

It's an interesting discussion though :p

On my old channel I monetized from the very beginning and really, its not worth it, because it can put people off and I feel like it did. This time around, I have no ads. If a video gets extremely popular, then I may monetize that one (or all videos), however, for now I don't.

Also, its not worth it when you don't have thousands of views on videos because you make about 10p and it amounts to nothing.

I think it can go both ways. If you don't have ads then all of a sudden turn them on, it might turn people off. However that is better in the long run than it is to start your channel out with ads running. I didn't enable ads until I had 2k subscribers.

Glorious Adblock master race

I encourage the same perspective. When starting a new channel, minimize ads until you are gaining some sort of traction. You don't have to monetize every video. Pick and choose the best performing videos and monetize those.

Yeah I don't monetize and I'm not sure I ever will...? At least at the moment I feel like the amount I would make wouldn't justify the annoyance that does immediately put some people off watching videos with ads. I might be too used to Netflix, but ads definitely grate on me and put me off watching something if I'm not sure I'll like it.

Even if it´s a very small amount and annoys a lot people, it´s better than nothing. just focus on the content and people will look past the ads and watch the videos!
