REACT WORLD?

I'm guessing a lot of people who make these kind of videos will simply use "reaction" and "reacting" as a way to play it safe, but I'm guessing most will not even be aware of any of this.

I've trademarked something for another business and was told one of my words was too generic, so I had to trademark the entire phrase (which is what I wanted anyway).

They won't be able to trademark the word "react" because it's too generic.

By attempting to trademark that word, they are basically going to take down any video with that word in it, if they did obtain a copyright to it, and put a monopoly on the react videos. This is the reason for their "react world" b******t.

Don't be fooled, this is just an attempt to make more money. Greed takes over and you become more money hungry. If you're an upcoming YouTuber, this is a prime example to always be humble.

It was my understanding that they're trying to trademark "Kids React" "Seniors React" "Youtubers React" etc... and have it all under "React World"

It's despicable that they can try and trademark a concept. That they use others work without paying is complete hypocrisy and parasitism.

Not my twitter, but this has been popping up lately.

The hurdle in this one is "kids + react" he would basically have to call it "youths react" or "ben and kate react" to by pass it.

Darn so my 'Kids react to TheFineBros losing a million subscribers because they were greedy bastards' is not going to be able to be made?

edit:

Well looks like Fine Brothers have issued a new statement.

A message from the Fine Brothers
Hello,

We’re here to apologize.

We realize we built a system that could easily be used for wrong. We are fixing that. The reality that trademarks like these could be used to theoretically give companies (including ours) the power to police and control online video is a valid concern, and though we can assert our intentions are pure, there’s no way to prove them.

We have decided to do the following:

1. Rescind all of our “React” trademarks and applications.*

2. Discontinue the React World program.

3. Release all past Content ID claims.**

The concerns people have about React World are understandable, and that people see a link between that and our past video takedowns, but those were mistakes from an earlier time. It makes perfect sense for people to distrust our motives here, but we are confident that our actions will speak louder than these words moving forward.

This has been a hard week. Our plan is to keep making great content with the help of our amazing staff. Thank you for your time and for hearing us out.

Sincerely,

Benny and Rafi Fine

*This includes “React,” “Kids React,” “Elders React,” “Lyric Breakdown,” etc. Please note: It takes a while for the databases to update, but the necessary paperwork has been filed.

**Content ID is YouTube’s copyright system that automatically flags content that looks like or sounds like copyrighted content. This mostly flags videos that are direct re-uploads of our videos (which is what the system is built for), but if you know of a video that has been claimed or removed incorrectly, please email us with “false claim” in the subject line.

How the media/news works: There are two sides to every story, but only two, i.e. one side is The Fine Bros being money-grabbing and wanting to stop people making react videos. The other side being that The Fine Bros would never do that and that they had good intentions.

Let's look at the actual situation though:
- Basically it looks like The Fine Bros noticed there are a lot of react YouTubers other than themselves, and wanted to basically create their own branded MCN for them (despite them not wanting to call it an MCN). This means expanding what they're doing and adding some professionalism and branding to other less well developed react youtubers videos. It also means expanding the REACT brand and The Fine Bros influence themselves. Plus, they are correct about the fact that this kind of branding and trademarking does happen on TV and such. So to them it probably just sounded like a smart next business move.
- What they didn't do was really step into the shoes of the people this affected. They saw it from the side of people who'd want to join up and who'd benefit, they didn't think about the people who want to make their own reaction videos without having to hope that people were searching for something other than "react".
- After the backlash they realised it was an unpopular idea, and they're probably ******** their pants now after seeing the reaction, the constantly dropping subs, etc.

So let's be real. Bad business decisions happen. Sometimes people overlook big things like this, and think just because another business has done it, it's not going to hurt anyone if they do it. It's why anything like this needs to be planned better.

Now they've apologised and revoked the whole thing, which was a smart business decision and the best form of damage control they could do.

Was it a good idea? Business wise sure, for the fans/viewers/other folks, it's a nasty move.
Do they deserve the flak for their idea? Yes.
Do they deserve to be forgiven for owning up to their mistake and taking things back? Probably. Though I still think they really need to make a long video with a sincere apology on their channel, it'd be in their best interests.
