I think a lot of people love a good underdog story, no matter where it happens. It's kind of comparable to Daniel Bryan's or Chris Benoit's rise to wrestling fame. They were the small guys who started from the bottom, and worked their way to the top. They were constantly told that they would never amount to anything, and that they'd never succeed on the big stage. So we as fans got invested in that when we knew their backstory, and knew what they went through. We wanted to see them succeed, so we supported them as much as we could until finally everybody had to take notice.
Same goes for YouTubers, and you're right, it makes them very relatable. If we see this person who grew up the way that we did/are right now, then it's showing us that, hey, we can make it too. There's still a chance for us to be something, even if right now it feels like the world is falling on us. So I guess, it's more of a journey. You want to see their journey and see how they do, and watch this person who you can relate to live their life, because it's inspirational in a way.
Of course along with this there's that, undeniable charm/charisma that some YouTubers have, which is another reason that those Tubers shoot to the top of the most subscribed channels. That's something that can't be taught. You either have it or you don't. That goes to their advantage as well.
Gosh I wasn't expecting to write that much. >_< Maybe I've just been spending way too much time on Tumblr. I'm being consumed by the Social Justice Bloggers Union oh god. >_<
I just hope it's somewhat understandable. I'm too lazy to check everything.
