Why Are the Top Youtube Stars so Popular?

They're original, that's why. Nobody has ever thought "This guy plays games so well, I think I am a fan", it's "I am a fan of PewDiePie". Copying some other guy is just a forced effort and is gonna come off fake. Why so many people never find an audience is because - their content sucks, their equipment sucks, and they have no definable personality.

Extremely big and extremely dedicated fan base. People watch their videos because of them not because of any other reason. That's why even if they upload rather mediocre videos they'll still be on the top (may be not for ever though). :)

You only need a certain amount of natural growth before everything else comes into force like YT promotion then you can only grow and grow.

I would say its because at the time that they started their ideas were original and now people try to copy them to get views.

I had to study this for years in school and a huge reason many of them are popular is because they do an excellent job of bringing in their personalities/personal life stories.

I can watch anyone be ridiculous online, but for someone like Jenna Marbles, I feel like I relate to her and her life and the things she talks about. She tells stories about herself and her life and in my head I'm like OH MY GOD THAT HAPPENED TO ME TOO/I TOTALLY THOUGHT THAT. By doing this, you then feel by association that you are a close friend and are emotionally invested.

Same with PewDiePie. I don't know him and I am not a gamer, but I feel like I know him and his dogs and his girlfriend because he has shared those aspects of his life with us if that makes any sense.

Snowball effect.
Pewdiepie is featured heavily on twitch and youtube as a suggested view.

As you get more popular youtube does all the work for you and so do your fans when they tell there friends and so on.

Also having a few decent viral videos helps. you could have a viral video but if it is Sh*t no one will sub.

I think the way most Youtubers get popular is from a one hit wonder that then makes the viewers check out the rest of their channel, such as pewdiepie, pretty sure his first successful video was Amnesia, because he was the first person (i think) to make a let's play series on such a game (horror) with a lot of funny reactions and had such an original character. I think it's mainly due to being original, but it's kinda hard since there are literally millions of others trying to do the same :)

People confuse me for a guy XD and I don't give an F

Lol It makes sense I understand XD It the same for guys, some girls just watch them because they are "Hot" and in reality they are A-hole that treat girls super bad and even say bad things of them in their videos *coughvineboyscogh*

People also confuse me for a guy!

Pretty much all of the top YouTubers have been doing it for years. They've built up a strong audience, and a big fan base.

It has nothing to do with their content, it's their personality. And, to be fair, they're original. If you go around acting like PewDiePie, well you're not going to get far. You're not unique or original, you're just copying him.

You also got to remember the videos that made them popular. iJustine for example got popular because one of her videos went viral, Jenna Marbles the same.

True, but content is also important.

It helps being big on YouTube, as your name is passed around & you have a better chance at exposure,
but just remember that they, like everyone else, had to start from the bottom, and work/build themselves up.
