i think its kinda a bit of both , you will gain views and a sub or 2 and ya some people will like it and some will not. lets be honest alot of people are mean .. or like i call them " @$$ holes " and they will make fun of you for it but it does not matter keep up your channel and if they dont like it well to bad .this happened to me but then I started to involve them in the channel and they started to like it more and more and now will talk about it in a good way , i guess what im trying to say is , dont stop your channel cause of some trolls at school and if you can get them to like the channel in some way .

At first when I started I wanted to keep my channel secret from family/friends. I wanted to grow a bit so I wouldn't have an inactive unwatched channel to show to them. But pretty early on I changed my mind. They've all been awesome about it. Many of them subbed and they occasionally share/reblog my videos which in turn gets me new viewers and all that. Lot of my friends see the channel as a way for them to keep track of what I'm up to since after college we've gone our separate ways. My family and church members tend to enjoy my georgian church/language videos and share them with their own friends and families. It's only been a huge bonus for me to tell my circle of friends and family.

From my own experience both..but more on the bad side.

The first friends I told about weren't so bad...when they showed up, when I told them I had a channel they would watch 1-2 videos then I'd never see them ever again.

The next friend I told.....ugh. He thinks of himself as it know it all so he kept trying to give me advice and telling me how to run my channel. It was annoying. I don't like being told how to do things, its my channel and I will run it they way I want to and play games that I want. I mean, I'm not trying to say that I'm not open to suggestions from my viewers, but his suggestions were Minecraft, Skyrim, CoD, Battlefield, like seriously? No. I'm not going to play these games just to become "popular".

I don't go around telling my friends about my channel, but if they do find it, or ask if I have one, only then will I talk about it.

Depends on your friends and what they're into. Obviously not a good idea to tell that one guy that hates Youtube and thinks making videos for it is absolutely stupid and a waste of time.

Depends on your environment and the people you come in contact with. If they stumble upon your content, there's a good chance they'll like it, or a good chance they'll laugh at you for that. I had both reactions from my friends.

I feel that having friends/real world people that you know inquire about your channel isn't bad. If people tease you for it, who cares. If it affects you, stop YouTube because the internet just makes things worse. Everyone receives hate comments/threats on YouTube, especially if you ever get bigger in the sub counts.

I just recently shared with my work and my facebook friends that I do YouTube and I actually found that most people wanted to help!

It could be either/or in my opinion. Honestly, its free frickin advertisement. You can't go wrong with that. Think of all the views. They'd be doing you a favor.
