Subscriber Envy

I think this happens to a lot of us. It's just a normal thing for us to do. I'm sure even those with 100k say this about someone with 1M too.

I suffer from this pretty much everyday haha! I try and tell myself not to worry, it's just a number but it's such a low number haha!

i've compared myself to many bigger channels but i know that...
the 'bigger' channels i compare myself to,have worked hard for months,or even better, for years to get there,so imo it's a matter of time and the hardwork you put in

All the time! I really need to learn to stop comparing myself to different people, as they are different people, and not me, although I'd like to believe that what we do is the same

Ughhhh I'm so guilty of this. Sometimes I'll watch someone who has 100K + subscribers and think, "Why do you have so many subscribers and I don't? I make similar content to you." or "My videos are at least as good as these... why don't I get the views that they do?"

hahaha petty first world problem!

Do you do this?

I know this feeling. There's a big youtuber I watch who started around the same time as I did and I look at it sometimes and go 'Could I have been like them if I hadn't taken a break?' and stuff like that.

Anyways, there are so many things that set people apart despite similar content/quality. Promotion level, luck, even someone's personality, whether it's commentary in a game or how they spin together their description/how they talk to others.

I don't really think that. I like to think of those guys as goal marks, most of them are people who inspired me to start youtube, so I say one day I'm going to bring bring joy to that many people with my videos, and I'm going to reach them and they will want to do a section with me, and I'll meet the people who inspire me. A bit greedy I know but it's a dream. When I'm down I'm wishing just someone would watch my video who I'm not friends with. But that's a new youtube channel problem I suppose.

"My videos are at least as good as these... why don't I get the views that they do?"
Time for the most honest answer in the thread. The reason is because your (any person saying it, not you particularly) videos very likely are not at least as good as the videos on the channel with tons of subs. They probably are a fair measure worse in some cases much worse and for a variety of reasons of which the person complaining is blissfully unaware. The truth is that many of us tend to grossly overvalue our own work (very similarly to how we grossly overvalue certain traits in our children...cuteness...intelligence...comedic value, etc. A person's child is always funnier/smarter/cuter to them than to others observing from the outside). Our youtube channels are like children to us on some level. We've put hard work into them and we our proud of them, so we tend to lose objectivity when assessing the entertainment value of them. Comedians will tell you that they don't know what jokes will hit and what ones will miss. This is because they think that all their jokes are funny...they overvalue their work.

This is why getting truly objective people to look at your channel is hugely important and why this forum and the review section can be vitally important to the success of a channel. This is why I also do not feel bad at all telling someone who asked for a channel/video review that their material needs work. When someone asks for an honest opinion and you sugar coat it too much you are doing them a disservice. Wow, this has become a bit of a rant almost...getting a little off topic too. It's 3:45AM and I'm tired. Anyway, that's my answer...that's the answer. Really compelling content seems to find a way of rising to the top.
