Something that annoys me about some content creators

I'd definitely argue against the idea that it's "free money". Imagine the amount of work people put into their YouTube videos and channel overall. Now on top of that, they've added Patreon, many of which offer private updates and rewards which is even MORE work.

To be fair, I'm one of those small channels that has a Patreon, and while I didn't have a large following to start with, I think it's quite fair for me to try and make more of a living off of the work I do. All of my content on my YouTube channel is free and the price to donate to get rewards off my Patreon (which I work very hard to update as often as I can) is insanely cheap.

If people want to try and make money from what they do, I see nothing wrong with that. If they really are these "freeloaders" as you make them out to be, odds are they won't get very far anyway. The begging and threats can only get someone so far in life, it's a lesson they'll figure out the hard way. In the mean time, I wouldn't lump all small channels in the same category.
 
I think it's alright for the smaller channels to use it if they use it in the way I believe it was intended.

For each specified donation amount, give back. Do something special for all supporters who donate each amount.

Example: $10 = shout out or feature in a video.

I think that's why they have it set up the way they do. Problem is, most don't do it this way.

I could be wrong but I think that's how it's supposed to be done.
 
If you treat YouTube like any other business I think Patreon makes sense. Let's say you had a product you wanted to make. You could launch a kickstarter campagin. With YouTuber's using Patreon the only difference is that their product is a YouTube channel. If they can get other people to believe in their product and donate a small amount monthly so they can create videos I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Personal choice though. I've got no issue with it but it would feel like begging to me.
 
I honestly haven't heard about this! I think some people get so caught up with YouTube money-wise, that they forget about the creative side of it, and just start treating like a business. For me, YouTube is such a creative outlet, and if money comes later on down the way, that's great, but if not, it's not the end of the world.
 
Depending on the kind of videos you make it can get expensive pretty fast. For example, in my videos I use a lot of graphics, stock photos, stock videos and music...and I pay for all of it out of my pocket...but it's cool because I love making videos.
Because I use all of the extra things in my videos I can understand people asking for donations/support because the production costs are coming out of their pockets and any donation helps to ease the cost of making videos.

For every video I make here are the things I need and have to purchase in order to create good content:

Stock photos:
$10 per month for a stock photo site that gets me 20 images. If I go over 20, I pay more. If they don't have what I need, I go to other stock sites and pay $3-$10 per image.

Stock videos:
I pay $100 per year for unlimited video downloads but they don't always have what I need. In that case, I pay $5-$20 for a video clip if I can't make it myself.

Stock music:
This is the drainer for me. In most videos I'll use at least 2 tracks. Each track is licensed for single use so to cover myself legally I have to purchase the track again if I use it in another video. Each track costs between $14 and $25.

Equipment:
Everybody on this forum knows the cost of equipment. I have 2 nice cameras that were not cheap. 2 nice mics that were not too expensive but still cost several hundred dollars. Plus a lav mic, studio lights, accent lights if I add some color to my background, light stands, tripods, etc. Equipment adds up fast.

That is my personal breakdown and I'm sure some creators pay a lot more per video than I do.

So for me, down the road I'll put up a patreon page to help ease the costs a little but I wouldn't threaten viewers with the penalty of lesser quality content.
 
I don't really care about Patreon and donation money. Weirdly enough my fans were 'begging' me to create a Patreon page so they could support me that way.

People were asking how they could support me, and if I would open a Patreon page :). So I did.

This is the cost of doing business though. When I started my channel I knew I'd have to spend money, and I didn't expect anyone else to carry that weight. I personally pay $200 a month for stock photo use. and I don't have a patreon nor will I ever. I understand that it's a personal choice, just from what I've seen it looks like there are a lot of people mis-using it, and the only reason they are making videos is to get paid.[DOUBLEPOST=1442446399,1442446330][/DOUBLEPOST]

Which is completely ok. If you have fans that want to support you, I see nothing wrong with it. My original post is about the people that shove it down your throat and even use it as a threat. It bugs the hell out of me lol. Also hey, haven't talked to you in a while hope you're well :D
 
People are kinda desperate, over-eager, or full of themselves anymore. Unless you're someone like Markiplier or DiamondMinecart... don't bother with Patreon. If you barely have 20 or so subs, just don't. Noone watches your channel and noone is gonna donate to your stuff. If you work 8 hour days... guess what, unless people donate enough to pay your bills, you're still going to work 8 hour days, so your content won't change or improve so don't make 'Patreon threats'. Don't promise what you can't deliver... and still take the money anyways.

I work anywhere from 8-10 hours a day. I'm not about to quit any time soon, so I can't promise my viewers more than what I'm already doing. If I were to use Patreon, I know I wouldn't get enough to buy new equipment and blah-blah, so I can't make those kinds of fake promises.

These people only want to con you out of a few extra bucks. They can't make enough to match the payment threshold so they're resorting to this.
 
I can't remember where I heard it from originally, but someone made a good point a while back about not holding your content hostage. It's just a bad way to do business (and a worse way to encourage community)
