Something that annoys me about some content creators

Posting Mad!
Hey everyone, I just want to start off that this is going to be a short rant, and some of you may not agree with me but I can accept that and have no hard feelings to any of you :D

So, something I've been noticing for a while now is people using Patreon. Patreon as a whole I think is a good idea, it allows content creators to raise extra funds and support their channels. What annoys me about it, is literally EVERYONE is jumping on the Patreon train, even if they have a small audience. I get it, some people are attracted to the idea of "free money", but I personally have the opinion of it looks like begging. There is nothing worse to me than hopping on a smaller YouTubers channel, and the first line in their description is "Donate to my Patreon". To me, all it does is make it look like you're making the videos for the money and could care less about your content. What's even worse is some people use it almost as a threat. I've seen people say "Well I have to work 8 hours a day, and this takes away from time making videos so if I don't raise money my content is going to suffer" Like come on, it's completely transparent what you're trying to do and it looks terrible. In closing, I don't think Patreon is a bad idea, personally I'll never use it, but if you ARE going to use it, please don't shove it in peoples faces and use it as a "threat".

Well Andrew, I agree with your point. Small YouTubers should not do that, but I can understand their condition. We are living in an era of competition where earning money is damn difficult. However Patreon annoys me too, so obviously you are correct that one should not just use Patreon to grow their channel.

I actually never heard of that before xx

Some people join you tube for all the wrong reasons and even thought they make a small amount of money it will probably have a effect on there channel too if there subs feel the same way. Dont get me wrong some big or big ish YouTube who do invest lots of money into there videos maybe do deserve some money back for years and years of investment for others enjoyment. But channels that are small and just money grabbing will probably in the long run fall on their faces and quit.

I can understand it a little bit; The user makes or wants to make quality content but there goes a lot of time in it and sometimes the user has to pay bills etc so he/she is too busy to work on the videos.
If the user has some good bonus content to offer for donators then there's a better chance that the bigger fans would donate to that user.

It probably depends on the content and quality of the videos.

When I joined YouTube, "partnership" had a six figure layout requirement and was only available to large media companies. Then YouTube decided about 2010, to experiment with monetization for the average user-creator on an invitation-only basis. A user had to have content with a view rate and theme which YouTube Admin considered would attract advertiser bids to be invited to monetize either single videos, or a whole channel back then.

I sincerely believe that if the monetization model had finalized at that point in time, the Partner Program wouldn't be the completely muddled mess it is now, with every creator who founds a channel thinking YouTube will make their fortune for them. There are too many channels with similar content for the average YouTuber to make more than a few dollars a month under the current model, and it's time people realized this.

Mini-rant done.

Patreon was founded as a Crowdfunding solution for creators of Music, Art and even technology, not just videomakers solely. That said, a Patron needs to see ongoing progress and output, not simply be endlessly dunned for support when quality content isn't forthcoming. Also perks-for-patronage is the driving force of the Patreon model, and I think there are many who don't know how to utilize this feature properly.

I don't know what the OP's criteria for "smaller channels" might be either. Perhaps he or she would like to clarify this point. This thread reminded me that I actually do have a Patreon page, long neglected, and I have updated my About section to include it.

As a small youtuber, I capitalize off of those who are begging for money on Patreon by stressing that my viewers get to watch ALL of my baking tutorials for FREE. I have a full time job and don't depend on Youtube to pay my bills.
