Should I do the optimal video length of under 5 minutes?

Maybe you can split a 10 minute video in part one and two, if you think they are too long.
But I don't know if it is a good idea at all.
I already found myself clicking away on a video because of its length, on the other hand I was watching 20 + minute videos, because I was looking for this type of content and the video was well done.

Thank you for the reply. I hear you totally... Same with me :)...
The thing about doing videos in parts is that the second halves always reaches far less views. My initial concern was in part that the base I would make in the first faze wouldn't appreciate a different length of content after they got used to a certain length, but thinking about it the bigger concern should be actually what you mentioned - which length to do to make them click in the first place... If they click I'm not worried but but they should click first...[DOUBLEPOST=1510859761,1510859140][/DOUBLEPOST]I'll figure it out. Maybe if I make a slow transition from one length to another... But if the channel takes of I believe I'll end up doing content of all lengths between 3 and 15 min, with the vast majority between 7 and 10...

I may be a tad out of date but I know that sometime ago Youtube where prioritising videos that were 10 minutes or over in length. Don't know if this is still the case.

Most of my videos are over 20 minutes in length and several are over 30 minutes in length, and I think that’s one reason YouTube has promoted me as much as they have. With the onslaught of “cord cutters” - people that have dropped their cable tv subscriptions in lieu of online streaming, YouTube is now a major contender on the living room big screen as opposed to just mobile devices. When I watch YouTube on the big screen, I purposefully look for longer videos to watch, like old school television. So, when I started my channel about 8 months ago, I went in knowing I would be making longer videos. I figured if I liked watching longform content on YouTube, then others might too. And while I’m certainly breaking no records, I am pleased with 16,000+ subscribers in just 8 months. And I think some of that came from YouTube actively suggesting my content.

So, don’t limit yourself by time. Turn on the camera and tell the story you want to tell, and don’t worry about the length. If it’s good, people will watch it. Good luck, friend!

I don't worry about time to much as my videos are all over the place, but basically if I don't think I can make the video a certain length and it still be entertaining to people I will cut it down and just leave the entertaining points and getting rid of the boring stuff.

Hey, thank you Highfalutin' Low Carb for your insight! The facts about YouTube in the living room are something I should added to the equation when thinking about the question about length, indeed. It's quite eyeopening. Congratulations for your success! I dream of reaching your numbers some day... Thanks!

It's easy to say make a 1 hour video engaging and viewers will watch to the end.

I expect viewers to have a short attention span and quickly decide if they want to continue watching.

I try to make my videos shorter than 5 minutes.
