Paid subscriptions

I think it was expected that they were eventually going to do something like this. I don't think it's a bad idea but I don't think that the channels that offer paid subscriptions are worth it.

People who keep saying how stupid and terrible of an idea it is obviously don't understand the purpose of it. It's not meant for people who already make free content and will suddenly start charging for it, forcing people to pay up if they want to see it. It's for those who want to either offer something extra at a premium price, or create something new and will charge. It will also likely be used by companies to put their TV shows on, or small independent creators who want to privately fund their own low budget show. So for those who keep saying how bad it is, you need to empty your head of rocks.

It could work for some things. I mean, I would pay for a VEVO subscription, not much, but I see the value in it. Maybe some other tutorial channels that take a decent amount of effort would also be good. As for most casual channels though, I think not.

You don't. You have the ability to apply for the paid subscription program, but you don't have the ability to activate it-only youtube can do that and they're being really picky. The only channels that have been approved already have paid content on other platforms.

uh no, they are not picky, they ask that you request its activation because they have to give you a choice in the matter, its a simple form that gets activated just like adsense, there is no going back.

I am not crazy about the selection of content that's being offered. It may get better in the future but for the most part I don't think it's really something I would be into, some of the channels that are being advertized in the paid section I don't think I would watch for free, but that's just me.[DOUBLEPOST=1372524767,1372524706][/DOUBLEPOST]With that said though, if they were to offer original content on the level of Netflix's house of cards or HBO'S Game of Thrones, then I would change my mind completely.

Where do you get your information from? That goes against everything that youtube told us at the paid channels workshop at youtube space. The application form even says it's to nominate your channel for consideration by the paid channels team, which is extremely selective. Channels that aren't performing have already been booted out of the program. If you look at the current lineup, there are 5 less channels than on launch day. There's a ton of misinformation on the paid channels program. Just because they let everyone apply, it doesn't mean you will be approved. There were a few channels on this forum that said they would apply and they are most definitely not in the program as of this morning.

I honestly don't think the paid subscription is meant for the average youtuber. They are trying to appeal to corporate and compete with Netflix trying to attract movie streaming and stuff like that. It is sad to see youtube move away from the people that make it what it is.
