image QUALITY!!? :$

hmm.. this forum page just says "post reply" ... it doesn't specify to whom I'm replying.. so hopefully the right people
will see this post..

to Yomarz:
the movie is just a standard H264 quicktime "compressed for youtube" movie, as best i can tell.. i think the pic in my initial post still best displays the gradual warp in image quality.. but nothing looks nearly as bizarre as that final youtube thumbnail..
thanks for your suggestions/help!

to SiegeTV:
alright, I'll try to Dropbox you the project sometime today! I still have to make a few more adjustments to the audio..
much thanks for the help![DOUBLEPOST=1396911617,1396905938][/DOUBLEPOST]Ok, here is the link to the final cut project.. it doesn't have the audio file.. but if you could give me any clues regarding getting an acceptable image quality upload to youtube.. that would certainly be awesome!

much thanks for your help!!
(I put a space in the middle of the link so that my post would go through)

dan[DOUBLEPOST=1396987072][/DOUBLEPOST]So.. the quicktime movie looks accurate.. but the Youtube upload is still shizz...

What quality are you actually uploading to youtube in? and are you creating the photoshop images the same size as your exporting your final cut file as?
Example. If you're rendering in 720p, make the images 1280x720p (.PNG). If you're rendering in 1080p, make the images 1920x1080p (.PNG).
I can have a look at your files later on today after I've woken up and maybe fix them all for you. As I will need to see the files and test a few things first so I can actually find out what the problem here is. Should be an easy fix with a few minutes of messing around.

P.S. If you've uploaded to youtube in 720p make sure that option is selected when viewing the video on youtube otherwise those pictures are an unfair test.

Hey man, thanks for the post! I'll prepare all the info for you ASAP![DOUBLEPOST=1397035199,1397007886][/DOUBLEPOST]Hey I put together some pics of my workflow, creating test movie with a single .PNG ... maybe you'll see some clues in here as to what might be going on.. Can you make sense of these?

Hmm... more strangeness: I couldn't get the above photoshop JPEGs to upload to this post, even after crushing them down to 100K each... they would only upload after I exported them from Preview with a significant drop in image quality.. sigh.. my brain is pretty much broken at this point, lol.. Again, any light you can shed on this crazy sitch would be stellar!

Thanks!!
dan[DOUBLEPOST=1397095583][/DOUBLEPOST]Hey Andrew, just to update you...!

I tried bouncing the photoshop files from iMovie and Premiere CC.. with the same
results.. I tried uploading to Vimeo as well, and it still looked like shizz..
I even tried taking screenshots of the Photoshop files and using the screenshots
to make the movies.. but the results were the same! :$

I then tried bouncing some other random non-photoshop files and the upload
quality was perfect.. There must be something wrong with the Photoshop exports!

Now, to pull out the last of my hair.. :banghead:

Each step is going to mess with the quality because it's being compressed along the way. If it looks OK in your video editor and even after rendering, it is something to do with YouTube. It's possible YouTube doesn't like that format. Have you tried exporting to mpeg4(h.264) or even mpeg2? YouTube kinda sucks at generating thumbnails in general. I never let YouTube set the thumbnail because it does some funky effects to it which sometimes look nothing like the video. You're best off exporting a single frame of your video as a PNG (not jpg, because YouTube will compress the hell out of it) and setting it as a custom thumbnail.

My 2 cents; PNG is the new JPEG. There really is no reason to use JPEG anymore these days. It's old, it's ugly and it doesn't support transparency. Save in PNG whenever you can.
