I have a problem.. With people around me.

OK, so this is probably something others have to face aswell (hopefully not) but i have a problem were the surrounding people in my life don't really understand what im doing on youtube and for what reason i keep doing it instead of doing stuff that is "more fitting".

The best example is my parents, sure. My mother actually got really happy when she heard that I started making videos on youtube, because she were the one saying that i should work with something radioish/commentary/voice acting and related stuff hole my life, so she have been supporting me ever since.

But my father, oh lordy.. were to start, i actually think i will take the short story there.
He want me to quit it. Badly. And hes telling me that i should not be spending so many hours of my day on something i don't get any money from.

And this annoys me into bits, because i don't want to work with youtube because of the money i could get. I want to do it because i find it fun and challenging, sure.. honestly the only reason i would do it for the money is to shut him up and let me do what i love.

So tell me your experience about the people surrounding you, do they support you or want you to quit or something between :P
and i would love to know something good to tell my dad that maybe helps him to understand youtube better.
 
Some people get annoyed when I start yelling at my mic for a Youtube video...
But oh well, I like making videos so I will not stop :)
 
My parents love it to death. My dad got me a 500GB external hard drive so I can record gameplay with it :D They arent fond of it however when I'm up at like tweleve oclock :P Oh and my friends are really suportave too.
 
Hiya there! First congrats on being a YouTuber. I think YouTube is a great way to dig into your creative self. For me, youtube has definitely been an outlet. And to be honest, it took a whole accident for me to realize that what I really wanted to do was so different from what I was already doing for a living. I met with an accident about a year ago..and when things finally settled down, I realized that what I was currently doing then (it paid me good cash too) was not really what I wanted to do. Sometimes I think it takes big things to happen that make you realize small things mean more to you. Im a crafter on youtube, really different from what most of you do here on the forums but to share a little experience, I always wanted to sort of like craft. Like it was an outlet for me to relax..to think and be creative. So I thought to myself , why not make a blog about craft and I started with that. I started posting some of my crafts and eventually that lead to me selling some of it. It kicked off and finally I thought, hey maybe I could teach people to make them because it brought me such a sense of relief. and thats how youtube started. Right now, I make money off my crafts and some off youtube, but it really really boils down to passion and believing that if you keep doing what you love to do, it will work out. There are no odds against it. My mom and dad supported me but some of my friends were like...why did you give up so much just to do a bunch of stuffed toys and bracelets on youtube?

My answer is simple though, with passion comes anticipation, anticipation comes growth and with growth comes fruition of what you are working towards. Never give up. Keep working towards your goals even though it is not for money, because eventually, you will see what comes of it :)

Some have being a bit hurtful but whatever, I don't expect it to be understood/liked by most people. I don't have the pressure on the money part coz I have a full-time job which takes care of that part.

As far as telling your dad something, hey, maybe you should be able to come up with a way to do your channel AND something that would keep your old man chilled, he only wants the best for you I reckon.

Before I get deep into my post let me just say this: I am very new to the YouTube community. I didn't even KNOW that YouTube WAS a community until about 7 months ago. I started doing random voice overs on my channel as practice and just being on YouTube led me to other YouTubers and I became informed.

ANYWAYS.
I decided to pursue YouTube as a full time thing because I really enjoy making people laugh. Of course, doing this is extremely hard, requires dedication, creativity, and TIME. My parents were not happy when I told them. I was on my way to my 2nd year in college doing something that I hated because it made my parents happy and I could potentially get an extremely good job since my dad has connections in that field. Now my parents don't mind, but that's only because I told them that YouTube is my Plan B. So just try your best to multitask.

Tl;dr - To get your parents off your back, don't make YouTube your only goal in life. Have a back up plan that you can work on, and only show off any success that you get from YouTube to your parents. Also, show them other YouTubers' success. And never quit on your dreams.
