I had to make a new channel recently due to difficulties and I learned something doing my channel over again. People are more likely to watch videos with custom thumbnails. Now I got into the habit of making thumbnails. It is fun to do and beneficial. I am so happy lol![]()

I use custom thumbnails all the time, makes it look... More... professional?! Haha

It does, but I was crap at photoshop so instead of it looking professional, it looked like total s**t until I got some practice lol. Now it is second nature to make custom thumbnails![]()

It's quite hard to read the text on the thumbnails, plus you shouldn't put pictures of yourself in it, unless they're high quality.
I think that is a given. My camera is good enough to do so. As far as text, some fonts read better than others with thumbnails.
You're headed in the right direction! IMO, you're not making the most of the space you're given. In your Renegade-X thumbs, for example, you could push the logo all the way to the left, even slightly off the edge, and make room for your photo to be twice as big! You're making a great face, and making that easier to see is going to catch a lot more eyeballs.
As far as fonts go: try outlining your fonts in white or black, depending on the background, and use bold fonts as often as possible. As a rule of thumb, your text should cover at least a 25% of the screen.
That all said, I'm glad you're making custom thumbs! It's an important tool.
