Discussing how much you earn......

You guys are looking at this from the wrong side. If advertisers know how much creators are getting they can figure out how much their competition is paying Google for the ad space which weakens Google when negotiating with advertisers.

And I think you've hit the nail on the head right there! That makes perfect sense!

But in the workplace, its not written into your contact that you cant tell anyone else what you earn.

Working at the same attorney's office since now almost more then ten Years I can ensure you that it does depend on from which country you are and in what industry you are working.

I know a few Company in Great Britain that would sue the s**t out of your a** if you would run around and tell everyone how much you are earning. As JustSomeGermanDude has already mention if does often depend on the Company itself too how they are handling this topic.

Google's secrecy is also one of the reasons why they can't figure out a deal with the GEMA on music rights in Germany. YouTube doesn't want the GEMA to reveal how much they (YT) have to pay, but the GEMA is bound by law to make those numbers public (and offer the same deal to other platforms like vimeo.)[DOUBLEPOST=1377089396,1377088953][/DOUBLEPOST]
It is if you earn a high salary.

BA-ZING!

In a real business you are never allowed to talk about how much money you earn
I guess they want that on youtube also.

That differs a lot from country to country. In Germany employers often have it in their contracts but it's not legal. So you can talk about what you're earning without breaching your contract and there is nothing they can do about it. At least not in legal ways. They just rely on employees not knowing about this. (And most of the time it works.)

Well obviously I don't speak on behalf of the whole world. In UK law breaching work contract is a sackable offence.

I never understood why it's so taboo to talk about income.

Honestly, not openly discussing it only hurts workers in the long run. You can get a few under-earners getting shafted without knowing they're being exploited for their skills while others are making a reasonable amount for doing the exact same thing.

Employers encourage you not to share so they can pay others less if they can get away with it. It's a race to poverty really.

does it really matter?! people get paid different amounts for all sorts of reasons. with regards to talking about it I feel if someone wants to disclose how much they earn why shouldn't they be allowed it to. The only way it can have a negative effect on someone else is if they allow it to. If anything it should have a positive effect by showing people potential and a sense of competition which everyone really needs
