Best time to monetize?

When do you think is a good time to monetize?
Do you think getting in average approx 1000 views a day good enough for adding adds or save till I can get at least 5k views a day?

What's your opinion & also how much do you make a week from YT?

It varies from channel to channel, never do it when you're super small (like me). But with your subscribers and views I would say it wouldn't be the worst decision, however, there's no real "set time" on when to start. It just depends on when you feel your channel is ready.

I believe you're not allowed to share your earnings from YouTube, hence you only ever find out about estimated and things like that. Pretty sure it's in the terms of service or something like that..

I think it doesn't really matter when you monetize.

People who complain about that you are monetizing have no real reasons to complain.

It can put people off if you're a small channel and you're monetizing and I understand why. If you click on a video, but have to sit through an advert first and the channel has 50 subscribers or something you might think it's not worth the time and click off

Honestly I don't think that's the case. My average views and viewer retention actually *increased* when I started monetising videos. The thing is, almost every major channel monetises their videos, so as a result, 99% of the videos anyone watches are monetised. Now some people like myself just use adblock and never see ads regardless - while those who don't, expect to see ads on almost any video. If they don't see ads on a video, rather than thinking "Great this guy is nice and hasn't monetised" - they just think "Ah I've probably watched enough ads in the last 15 minutes that now YouTube has decided not to make one appear on this video".

You should monetise your channel from day 1 in my opinion. There is no reason not to, and in all honesty I suspect YouTube search algorithms favour monetised videos over ones that aren't - after all, it makes sense from a business standpoint that YouTube would favour the videos it makes more money from over those that don't show ads or make them the same money.

It was after I started monetising my channel that my first video suddenly shot up in search rankings and started climbing in views (now has 26k, was under 1k before monetisation).

Tl;dr do it already. Enable all 3 types of ads on your videos too. Like seriously, if someone is bothered enough about those ads, they'll just install adblock anyway - so it won't matter.

That's really interesting actually, I've always been advised to monetize until you're bigger. Though, saying that, there is a channel owned by someone I know and they're growing fairly fast and monetize (still rather small though).

Very very interesting.. I guess it can't hurt to try?

Super interesting points you bring up. May start experimenting with it since I never considered doing it until having enough views to make any sort of money. Thanks for sharing :)

That YouTube opened the flood gates and now lets practically anyone monetize caused a big part of the problem channels now have with low CPM. With so many more places to place ads, advertisers don't have to bid as high to be shown.

Even sadder is that the vast majority of them will never hit the $100 threshold and, in essence, give all of the money earned straight to Google.

My view is simple- if you're not getting enough views to earn a check in a few months (at least 25k views a month), there's no reason to have your channel monetized. Go through the processes needed and have it all set up so that you could activate it on a video whenever you want, but leave it off until it actually makes sense to have on.

That way, if you happen to see a video start to catch on or it's views spike, you can activate it quickly... odds are that even if it does become popular, it's not going to gain a hundred thousand + views without you noticing.

Sadly, my view isn't the popular one... there are millions of channels out there, talking proudly about the $3.87 they've earned even though they'll likely never see a dime of it. But, if they weren't monetized, the cumulative millions they've all earned could have instead actually gone to the channels who do earn a check every month or two.

I would also advise to start immediately. Especially if you believe in the quality of your own content.

Totally disagree with the poster above me. His argument doesn't make much sense to me. Youtubers who are too small to ever see a paycheck are also too small to significantly influence the price of adverts. If you do as @Shakycow says you will potentially be throwing away hunderds of dollars. For instance, I am not at the level shakycow suggested, and won't be soon, yet I have already received two paychecks.

I also think that anyone who is halfway serious about Youtube will see a paycheck sooner or later.
