YouTubers selling merch

It's really about image and positioning. I sell tshirts too but it doesn't cost me anything. It makes me look more serious than one that doesn't though and so why not?

Also someday you will get big and the you should be ready for come what may

Out of interest, how do you set up these deals with sites where they'll produce and sell the shirts and you get a cut so it costs you nothing? And do you just have to send them images for the shirts and they do the rest?

Obviously I'm not planning on selling t shirts to my 24 subscribers atm lol but just thinking about the future. I like to aim big :D

I agree with always be prepared. I opened a patreon "just in case" so I could be sure I have my name on there, but I don't push it and specifically say on patreon "I'm not expecting anything, these are just personal goals, I'll get there myself". One day I'll either delete it or push it, but for now, it just exists, and has done since zero subs. If I knew what I was doing for tshirts, leggings and the like, I would so start that now, and change the design every 10000 subs xD

I don't see the problem with it. I've seen bloggers hock merchandise left and right with no following really to speak of. If small YouTubers want to try and sell something, eh. No skin off my back. Truth be told, I'll probably do it myself once I have the time to put into making some designs. Nothing needs to be justified - their channel, their rules, and it's not like you're being forced to buy something just because they're selling it.

I watched Amy Schmittauer's latest video last night; it's all about making money vlogging. She makes the point that every time a YouTuber tries to make money they are accused of being a "sell out", but that actually nobody should be ashamed of treating their channel as a business. If you can sell merchandise, even if it's just a very few items, I think that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that if it makes good business sense.

I can only see that selling merch would be hassle. I have subs but couldn't ever see them buying a shirt or sticker from me.

For once I'm not sure that I agree with you. I have seen other posts from you that indicate you are surprised with how many people watch your videos and how many subscribers you have. I reckon that you would also be surprised by how many people buy merchandise from you. I've not looked into it in any depth, but I understand that there are also ways for you to sell merch at zero-cost to you and with very little hassle.

You don't have to start an EVO T-Shirt factory in your garage and start packing and posting...:0)

I started merch at 10k subs and now make more from merch each week then I ever did working a full time job. The people who do it earlier are most likely entrepeneurs in the making (kids working from their bedrooms) and will get their/somewhere eventually

its every channel to their own and to be honest, you actually never know what the audience might think, you could literally have like 10 subs but 1 or 2 people are really interested in buying something from you or with your logo or something along them lines. Like i always say, everyone is unique in their own way and everyone thinks different about things :D i think selling merch is an awesome idea and a good business idea :) seeing some people walking round with the likes of your logo on clothing and stuff can actually attract more business to you if they like it soooo ya never know :D
