YouTube Tagging

Jay R.

I've Got It
What tools or strategies do you use when doing up the tags of your YouTube videos? Do you overshoot the 500 limit?

I try to have videos that are about things that would be searched for but don't have highly competitive search terms, then place tags accordingly.

I basically come up with so many search terms that my brain begins to hurt. I have reached the limit several times before, and when I do, I'll delete mediocre ones one by one until I'm under the limit by one :D

For example, in a Let's Play of The Last of Us, I'd enter in tags like this:

last of us, the last of us, last of, last, of, us, last of us remastered, last of us gameplay, the last of us part 1, the last of us lets play, the last of us game, the last of us ps4, the last of us ps3, zombie survival game, 2014 zombie games, playstation zombie games, the last of us part 2, the last of us walkthrough, the last of us playstation, the last of us first time, the last of us starting mission, the last of us first mission, the last of us prologue, the last of us funny moments, the last of us compilation.

Stuff like that, just imagine what search terms you would enter into Google if you were trying to find a video similar to what you're currently posting. You can usually get quite a few by thinking that way.

According to things I've read on here YouTube frowns on that kind of search term stuffing.
After getting my channel taken down for tags in the description, I read the ToS more times than books I needed to read for school, XD

YouTube frowns upon two things when it comes to the tags themselves: Misleading or Irrelevant.

Additionally, putting tags in the description is something they hate even more. As long as you keep your tags relevant, not misleading, and in the correct location, (in the tags section when you're uploading the video) you can reach the tag limit all you want.

Thank you all for the suggestions and things to look out for such as misleading and irrelevant tags. I will look more into it.

Was there a warning given before taking down your channel?
