My social media work has been very lacking, admittedly, and most of the views I've had so far have been via Adwords. I wonder if that has worked against me? I'm now not using Adwords at all, and just trying to spread far and wide via social and forums etc. I'll keep plugging away. This was always about playing the long game anyway.

Are you sure you have your SEO figured out? Posting at optimal times? (If you can't figure that out with your analytics because of your few views, maybe you can research competitors upload times to see what works for them?) I don't think social media is your problem and I don't really know anything about Adwords. I don't know and I'm very small still myself, but I have researched YT for years and just feel like you should be doing better than you are. GOOD LUCK!!!
