YouTube isn't making money

I think it's weird that the world's largest video sharing site isn't making money. Their ad revenue has to be astronomical. That said, I don't know anything about money and business so I could be making it seem like more in my head than it actually is. Plus, being owned by Google you would think that YouTube would have a powerhouse of other revenue streams to help provide additional income.
 
Does how much it costs to keep it operational, and up to date the reason why? I would think with how many videos are uploaded constantly that It would have to be bringing in a ton of ad revenue. When people don't monetize, does that hurt google?

I chose to keep just the youtube partnership, I haven't signed up with an MCN. Google keeps the same amount of revenue though, and MCNs and the creators split the rest right? I like google. Maybe if they had some employees contacting the top channels, and then trying to contact companies for sponsorship and get part of the cut? Or maybe better targeted ads on the channels.

Definitely true. It's why so many YouTubers strike up brand deals and sell other things like clothing. AdSense on websites doesn't make that much anymore either. I think this is why things like Patreon and Famebit are on the rise for sure.
 
Mostly operational costs, which should be very huge.

The infrastructure behind Youtube is huge. All the popular vids are streamed simultaneously to their viewers. Those are pretty big data sizes which are transferred and stored. Millions of people are watching at once, and it all goes smoothly. And then there are millions of big vids on Youtube which doesn't even have audience. Don't forget the personnel, energy and maintenance.

And what do they get for every 10.000 views?
 
Found that kind of surprising. Youtube gets 45% of the revenue from every monetized video on youtube, no matter what. So with all those big channels as well as little channels, youtube has to be getting like a billion+ video views a day and they get 45% of the earnings plus additional ad revenue on their homepage and stuff. With lots of youtubers making hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars a year, Youtube gets about the same amount plus every youtuber combined, Youtube is making billions of dollars a year, so seems ironic to say they aren't making money.
 
My naive self always thought YouTube made Google a hell of a profit.

Looking at the comments on that page, DaivRocks mentions requiring an ad view before one can post a comment. Lawdt. :eek: I know it probably won't happen (at least not in the immediate future), but damn. That'd be some seriousness lemme tell ya. Poor small children would have to watch two ads before doing what they got there to do. Breaks my heart.

Anyway yeah, hopefully some of their ideas really do help them turn a profit.

Yes, they have a huge income. But what do you think about the expenses? Do you think one server and one computer dude is enough? The infrastructure is huge to facilitate the viewers. For every billion views they have to add capacity to be able to cope with that. And don't forget the thousands not-so-cheap employers. Getting ads revenue for their operational costs is a terrible deal for Youtube.

Try to imagine... Would you offer a service streaming 1.000.000 views monthly from 3000 random vids for $700 a month? You need to buy several servers to be able to store your stuff. You need to maintain some kind of platform to be able to stream your stuff. You need to pay several workers to manage/maintain that stuff. You need to have like 300 internet connections to be able to stream it smoothly. And every day there are people uploading stuff to your server. So you need to keep increasing the c apacity of your servers. And hire more people. How much will your energy bill be with this operation? And what about 10.000.000 for $7.000? It's the same story times 10.
 
Someone at google needs to get their head out of their butts and install an adblock wall like gamejolt uses.

Don't want to watch the ad? Fine, you don't get to watch the video either.
 
That's true Adblock is causing a lot of problems, I admit I had it on but then I thought it through and turned it off. So I urge everyone to do so as well.
