Youtube Becoming Mainstream?

The more people join YouTube the more it becomes mainstream. But, to be honest, I think it's about as mainstream as you can get right now. There is no one that uses the internet that does not know about it. And more users that join up to comment means more chances of your videos being watched. So mainstream? It already is mainstream. Harder to become noticed? Hell yes, but, you shouldn't be joining YouTube with the sole purpose of being successful. And that is what most people seem to do nowadays. YouTube = A quick buck. It's only after a month they find out they where mistaken and fall off the face of YouTube. But by then another delusional YouTuber joins and clogs the feed with another video.

In general I'd say that it's definitely dangerous to say that you'd like it as a job. Sure, we'd all love to live off our channels, but it's just not always an option and definitely not something you should be targeting. I might make it sound like it's impossible, but it isn't. There's always room for new channels to grow! It's just a matter of being good at being yourself, while maintaining your channel.
Point of it all is that you should do your videos because you enjoy making them. Make every video better than the last one!

It possibly gets harder every day for the smaller channels to be noticed, however I think it may get a little easier at some point.
All the content creators that have been around for many years now, are growing up, I'm watching them all do it, some people are changing their content completely, some people have be outed for being possible rapists and whatnot so they have to go and on the whole, people are going to start looking for the 'Next Gen' of YouTube creators, the more people that leave or go off and do other things and have no time for YouTube... the more people we can possibly have to watch us (hooray!)

So optimistic! I like that :D well, except for the entire rapist thing...

well no thats not good but on the flip side if they leave, their now not fans can look else where, cue US! :D
Gotta disagree here though. I've never seen other youtubers as competition, but instead potential colleagues. This way of thinking will get you a lot further IMO ;)

I don't see them as competition either but I see it as if there are less people (abusers) around there is more chance of someone new checking out my channel. I love making friends with other YouTubers and whilst the number of subscribers I have isn't life or death to me, its always nice when a new one does turn up, we're all looking to grow :)

Couldn't agree more (Y)

Youtube is definitely mainstream. Just like the term 'Google it' there is 'Youtube it'.

There are absolutely tons of users uploading videos and wanting to be successful on Youtube.

It's been huge for years but it's always changing and the bigger Youtubers are a separate ball game to smaller Youtubers so don't worry about that. I don't know anyone who is content with the channels they are subscribed to, people are always looking for something new to watch.
