It could be a combination of those two factors. The way I calculate my CPM is to take the CPM reported in YouTube Analytics and multiply it by my Monetization Rate (what percent of my views were monetizable) - MR for short. I call this a Normalized CPM

Looking across my 3 channels:

• Tutorial Channel
  • Average CPM: $48.11 x 36% MR = $17.15 Normalized CPM
• Vlog Channel
  • Average CPM: $32.88 x 12% MR = $4.10 Normalized CPM
• Gaming Channel:
  • Average CPM: $48.37 x 6% MR = $3.03 Normalized CPM

So you see you have to factor in *both* the CPM and the Monetization Rate to get closer to the actual "CPM" or what someone is earning. I've also heard that channels with higher views get lower CPMs as well (the $48 CPM on my gaming channel is really high because I don't get a lot of views. If I had a more normal $5 CPM x 6 % MR then my normalized CPM would be $0.30).

Great overview. But all much higher than his CPM seems to be. But maybe it's really a mixture of several factors including non english audience.

This is pretty weird. Shouldn't it be higher than 200 with 500k views? I'd expect something around 500-1000 then at least or am I wrong?
Then again, I clicked 4 of your recent videos and didn't see a single ad? Are they even monetized? Or maybe it's because I am not a relevant target (not speaking the language).

Everything is monetized.. So it's actually weird! Because as you don't even speak Spanish you should be getting local ads. Weird indeed!

Maybe both... But mostly because English speaking countries pay more than Spanish :-/

You should be getting more than that? I'd say at least $2 per 1,000 views and Socialblade says you're at 734,000 views for the last 30 days. I'd think you should be getting $1,200-$1,500 on those stats. I don't know about your type of videos though, probably getting more outside-the-U.S. views, maybe some material that mainstream advertisers aren't eager to be on? I see you're with Fullscreen, they may be taking a chunk (not sure what your contract % is). I have a few channels and my CPMs vary substantially, even with the same material, based on how many views the channel gets. My experience shows it gets a little lower on average with huge views, but that's because so many views at that point come from outside the U.S. including countries with very low CPMs (like Vietnam, for example).

Another factor is your audience, are they motivated by ads? I have a friend who destroys iPhones and iPads for a living on his channel, his views and CPM is very high (high tech/high value stuff must pay a lot), but his CTR is very low because most of his audience are teenagers who can't afford to buy these things so they don't bother clicking on very many of his ads.

As you get bigger you can re-negotiate your terms. I think a 90/10 split is common with bigger channels. As for our channels, I would not sign with any network without a full 100% Adsense pass-thru. No one touches my Adsense, ha ha! I was with a network for a few months with a pass-thru and was offered this again with another, and we're talking the biggest networks out there. FYI, it wasn't Fullscreen, they would not go that route with our channel. One of my biggest reasons for not signing with a network (among many others) is that I don't have real-time access to my own Adsense account. I like to refresh Adsense and see up to the minute earnings, it's motivating to me and if there is an issue I can get on it right away. Like a few months ago some of the bigger kids channels had huge drops in CTR resulting in very low RPMs, it ended up being a system bug that got worked out, but I wouldn't have known right away to deal with it if I was with a network. You have access to YT Analytics but that's like looking a few days behind in the rearview mirror, and it doesn't have all the tools that Adsense does, like seeing my CTR and RPM right there real time. But who knows, I'm talking with another big MCN right now just to keep the door open. There's a lot happening in that world right now. But my fierce independence will probably keep me direct with Adsense.
