A lot can happen, though, even if you're not standing still. Your content quality or subject changes, your schedule changes, you cease to interact with your community, etc.Well unless your channel is standing still, it should grow exponentially and so should your subscribers, income, comments etc.
So every new year should theoretically be better than the last.
And if your channel is focused on a particular subject like video games, if the game itself loses popularity, your viewership will be negatively impacted as well. And vice versa, of course. For instance, my channel is focused on Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo III. I saw a massive, massive increase in viewership in March 2014 when the game launched its first expansion. There was a big dip late summer when players were losing interest in the game's content. The viewership shot up a little again after a patch. Of course, I had to stay active on my end, even if there wasn't anything "new" for me to do.
