Worst time to be a content creator?

Yeah on top of ad boycotting, YouTube did make some changes and they changed their algorithm a bit.
Back in the day you could grow at a decent rate even if you upload once a week. But now, YT focuses on the frequent uploaders and watch time. So you really have to upload more often and make use of the End Cards to keep people engaged in your channel because that's when YouTube recommend your videos over other similar channels that are not as active on YouTube.

It's a new era of YouTube and you gotta adapt to succeed.

Keep on grinding :)

When is YouTube going to fix this?

Fix what ?!

Known issues are listed here - https://support.google.com/youtube/known-issues/16903?hl=en-GB - There is no listed bug or "glitch" concerning how videos are listed, promoted or fed to subs. No glitches or bugs regarding views or subs or anything. There is only a minor user interface bug when subbing / unsubbing takes a few seconds longer than normal.

Other than that. - The algorithm has changed. It happens. Algorithm changes are not glitches. They happen several times per year. It's a part of being a YouTuber. Adapt or die.

YouTube is a zero-sum game. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-sum_game ) - That means, after an algorithm change, if channel A is suddenly getting 100 fewer views per day, then channel B is getting 100 more views per day. It all balances out. Instead of channel A moaning, they should be trying to understand channel B.

Ignore all the channels moaning about dropping views. It gives a skewed view of things. There are just as many other channels who gained them but obviously they're not making videos about it. They're just keeping their head down and getting on with things.

The only recognised "issue" on YouTube's "known issues" list above is concerning ad revenue. And we have a dedicated thread concerning fluctuating revenue here -> http://yttalk.com/threads/sudden-revenue-drop-lately-all-discussion-here-only.258203/ ( We do not need any more threads about it.)

Perfect answer.

It sucks that you're subs have gone down so drastically!
I do think the views/subs ect has been effective for this whole ordeal, i'm not really sure how it works but??? I'm a pretty small channel so I haven't seen TOO much of a difference, i don't gain many subs month to month, but my views have for sure dropped, not much, but on average they have definitely dropped..

I do think this will be fixed over time, I really don't see this as the end, and even if the old advertisers don't come back, youtube is big enough that other companies would be happy to take their places.

I think it'll just have to be a waiting game...

Let's just hope this is going to get better in the near future![DOUBLEPOST=1495589181,1495589128][/DOUBLEPOST]

Miss the good ol' youtube days!

What sucks too is that with YouTube arguebly being at its lowest point right now. It will deter a lot of potentially great content creators from even wanting to start.

I agree with ToysForKids. The way I see it is like when the stock market crashes, it's the best time to buy in. If people are dropping off, I'm trying to create as much great content as I can and put it out there.

It's a normal business cycle, tops pop off then they die out. On my journey I've learned that when things are doing really well things will eventually slow down. But, when it's down it's time to experiment then BOOM things are popping off again. Just stay look at the market and how it's growing then grind.

I disagree that this is the worst time to be a content creator. Actually, I think it's the best time ever to be a content creator. YouTube is going from strength to strength, it has a huge market share of internet traffic, there are lots of tools and advice to assist creators, and above all it is still free to upload!
Instead of channel A moaning, they should be trying to understand channel B.
This hits the nail on the head. It's too easy to blame YouTube's algorithm or issues with advertisers. We all experience drops in views, but often the reason lies with the creator rather than the platform that we use to exhibit our creations. YouTube is, and has always been, all about producing quality content consistently.

Well for me it's quite the opposite. Views since are better than ever before, getting regular subscribers, watchtime is increasing each month and my retention is getting better too. Ad revenue isn't so much a concern for me at the moment but it's going up. I think that because I upload consistently and I have a small but very active community, that's probably helped. I've said it before that youtube wants you to succeed as that's how they make money. And as others have said, youtube isn't broken or dead. You just need to figure out what works and what doesn't and what the algorithm requires.

Another reason now isn't exactly a great time to be a creator and get your work seen is because EVERYBODY IS DOING IT. A few years ago when youtubers were starting to take off, the idea that you could get well known and even paid to make videos like that was unheard of. Now it is a well known concept. My sister is a grade school teacher and she told me when asking kids what the want to be when they grow up, amongst typical answers like doctor, movie star, firefighter, some kids actually answered "Youtuber". It is great that more people are sharing content, but that does make it harder to get noticed.
