Why do some comments need approving

Hi

I have just uploaded a new video, now I hardly get any views currently, but within 3 minutes somebody has posted a comment (quote below) which needs me to approve it.

My question is how does youtube know which comments might be spam?

It is spam, and lazy spam at that, they have not even subscribed or liked the video, so its an easy delete. However, the user has 2600 subscribers. Why would they need to do this? I am not going to reward them with even a look at their channel, but it really annoys me.

Also, how did they find my video so fast? I think these people should have their commenting rights removed for a set period of time for doing this (I assume they write to loads of people).

Hey man nice video so im doing a shoutout series this week to celebrate 2600 subscribers :D if you want to be a part of it just check out my channel, subscribe, leave a like & comment on my videos and stay active and you will be in with a chance of winning a shoutout and even if you are not on this weeks episode you will be on the next episode next week or even the week after that im going to be doing it every week THANKS for your time :) - *name removed*

But again asking for me to check out their channel.

Since it's an automated process I guess Youtube searches for keywords like "subscribe" or "shoutout" and sends all the comments containing the blacklisted words to the "awaiting approval" tab

Many of these 'comments' are, I would assume, bot spam to begin with. Many youtubers set up automated software to spam social media and other youtube videos that share similar interests in relation to their own. I find this on Twitter a lot. A 'small' youtuber follows me. When I follow back out of mutual respect for smaller youtubers; Then I get an automated DM to the effect of 'Thanks for following! Check out my channel! Subscribe!'. Every. Single.Time. It's truly pathetic pandering.

Youtube has probably gotten plenty of complaints or reports over the years and so they have set up a way to catch the most obvious spam. It's a good system most of the time, but it does get a bit annoying if a legitimate comment gets caught in the crossfire.

Usually spam comments are the ones that need approval because, like the sub for sub comments and the hey check out my channel. Sometimes I have to approve comments that aren't even same, I think that's a glitch.

Basically what the others have said!
You can also blacklist certain words, like swear words, and go through any containing those words to decide whether or not you'd like them to be made public. Always good to check regularly as sometimes comments can slip under the radar!

In my experience comments that contain anything that even approaches self promotion get spamboxed. I rarely have to delete them myself. Sometimes I approve them when they link to a relevant video, but otherwise purgatory it is for them.

I have to say that I am super impressed how well the system works that filters comments. I guess it's really about keywords. Maybe they also scan whether one user writes the exact same text on several videos and no matter what he wrote put it into the "likely spam" section.

The system isn't perfect, but does the job well nevertheless. Most of the Spam comments are like the bolded ones but at times when someone refers my website, that gets caught too.
