When to add fan funding.

Tim Webber

Posting Mad!
I'm just curious, based on number of subscribers a channel has, when would be a good acceptable point to add fan funding?

Number of subscribers...

10 (I've seen it)
50
100
500
1,000
5,000
10,000+

Let me know what you guys think, :).

I put it on as soon as I could be bothered to put my details up. Doesn't make me avoid a channel just because they have fan funding, no-one is forcing anyone to donate.

Because it is so non intrusive, unlike obviously being advertised by the channel, then I often forget that it is even enabled for people I watch. Occasionally I see it on the side and am reminded of it. Don't worry about it, go ahead and enable it. No one is bothered by it. :)

I've been thinking about it but I thought waiting to hit 1,000 would be a good idea. But if people aren't it, maybe I'll go ahead and add it. :)[DOUBLEPOST=1445634044,1445633911][/DOUBLEPOST]

Honestly, I thought it would annoy people so I was going to wait till I reached 1,000 but if it really doesn't bother anyone, I might just add it it this evening :). Even though I only have 586 right now. Thank you for the input, :). Thanks for the input, :).

I think the number of subscribers is not the most important thing here. What is important (IMO) is if You have a great relationship with Your subscribers and viewers. Do they keep commenting and sharing Your vids, do they keep coming back and finally do they value Your channel enough to support You financially?

Yeah I agree with everyone else. Just whenever you want. :) - Quick question... I had a look at where you enable it & it says you need to enable monetization before you enable fan funding. But I don't want to monetize my videos... So is it possible to enable monetization but then not monetize anything? Haha probably a silly question. xD

Honestly, this is a hard question to answer. I do not think it solely relies on the amount of subscribers you have, there are so many other factors to consider.
For example, if you run a channel that has a high production cost per video (i.e into the hundreds, £100, £200, £300) like some of the short film production channels, then asking for crowd and fan funding from the channel launch would be acceptable and understandable.
But for most other channels that have low (to no) production costs, I think fan funding should be implemented when the fans offer to support their favorite YouTubers. Boogie2988 being a prime example of what I mean, check his content out when he talks about Patreon etc.[DOUBLEPOST=1445644895,1445644735][/DOUBLEPOST]

You can enable channel monetization but choose what videos you want to monetize. So, in a way, it is possible. Simply enable monetinization for your channel but do not opt in to monetize your individual videos.
It is possible.

Does anyone even use Fan Funding? I've never heard of people actually getting donations for that. Lots of people beg for donations but I've seen that fall flat on it's face too often with stuff like Patreon (which you can see publicly how much is being funded) that I can't imagine anyone getting money through Fan Funding, which is so obscure most people don't know that it even exists as a feature...

Quite a few short film production channels that I know of make use of fan funding, patreon and kick starter to help fund their short films (as costs can be quite expensive for one video).
