whats the consensus on more seriously minded videos.

I Love YTtalk
Hi,

I am struggling to come up with ideas but not because I have no ideas but because everywhere I look people are talking about how funny and how cool everything is and I get a little disheartened when I think about doing something about political process - not that I know much about it, I want to use my channel as an excuse to learn as much as for having fun and doing a bunch of research and making a constructive video is something I'd like to do.

I'm torn by the desire to get a few subscriptions by making content that is popular - which would be easy if I was funny, I mean I am funny, I make people laugh all the time, I just can't be funny deliberately, you know? - and content that I think is constructive and is what I like to do.

Like the thing I was going to do was a video about how new laws get passed in the UK because they are trying to pass a national service bill.

Is is YouTube suicide to start out with videos like that?

Thanks

That is definitely not YouTube-suicide!

Go for it! If you have an idea, just do it. Nothing should stop you.
Just because other people make comedy videos doesn't mean you should.

Look at how successful channels like CGPgrey is.

Suicide? No, quite the opposite. Looking at the past 3-4 years I'd say education is the second fastest growing sector on YouTube that only gets overlooked because of the dominance of gaming. And I don't just say that because I have to...

Just checked your video out spu, is that right?

Yeah, mind boggling yet, once you hear it completely obvious.

Good quality video and editing too, which means I ought to point out the second half of my problem, I'm doing everything from a nexus seven tablet so coming up with something entertaining is going to take some serious ingenuity...

I'm up for challenge tho, and thanks for the encoragement i will do that political thing, and in a non vloggy style as much as I can too.

First off: thank you.

Then:
I enjoyed your intro video. The "I'm clumsy and not quite sure what I'm doing"-factor was charming and funny and its always good to lighten up serious minded videos with some humour, so you can use that to your advantage as your go-to funny bit as long as your videos are low-fi.

And you can highly improve your picture quality by using light the right way. Just get all the lamps you have and play around with them. Shoot some test footage to see how it changes your pictures. Simply moving a light can change A LOT:

Thanksfor the advice, would you believe that my lighting options are basically limited to facing the window or not, which is unfortunate.

I am woefully underequiped but I do think that actual content is as important as aesthetics so if I nail the content at least I'll be half way there then all I have to worry about are technical issues.

I'll do my research tho and make improvements where and wheni can, I'm gettinmy daughter an HD can corded for christmas, its cheap, like £15cheap, but if its an improvement on what I have it will have to do I suppose.

Looking forward to more videos
