Personally I do my audio editing in Adobe Audition, really good program for sound editing and recording personally. Treat it as an advanced audacity but not free

Audacity is great and it's free!

It depends on what you are trying to do as well. If you want to do music audio editing, for example, Audacity might not be good enough.

For stuff that isn't free, i like to use Protools or Logic Pro for my audio.
For general editing and recording i prefer Protools as it's pretty simple and
straight forward and if i want to use a massive bank of instrument effects i like to use Logic Pro.
