When I used PC I started out on windows movie maker and was able to due most basic cuts and etc... then dabbled with sony vegas 12, a much more powerful program but would mess with my computer and create lag after awhile. Then this christmas my parents decided it was time to get me a editing rig aka an 27" iMac with Final cut pro x, the full cs6 suite with is premier pro, encore, photo shop etc.., and I do have after effects but I haven't subscribed yet, After about an hour of using both of these programs premier pro and final cut pro x I found they both are VERY VERY powerful and can do almost anything I need but can be a bit difficult at first and the learning curve can stump you for awhile, I prefer final cut pro because it is easier to get over PR but premier pro is a better program then final cut just takes a bit more to learn.
Disclamer all of these programs other then movie maker can be pricey, if mac look into iMovie then to do the trials for each program before buying.
