what does a youtube partnership do these days??

I Love YTtalk
i remember back in the day a partnership was how you made money, but now basically anyone can get an adsense account and make money.

also i remember a bunch of older features that only partners could get are now available for all youtubers, ie banners, custom thumbnails, ect.

so my question is, what is special about being a youtube partner these days? and what does being a youtube partner do for you?

It has a few small benefits specific to networks. Many networks have a free music library you can use. Also, they provide much better support than YouTube. When you are with a network, you are under their adsense (in most cases), so you are protected from disabled adsense, which is a very relevant problem. Some people just like the security of a large company behind them. It is a nice network of people to work with. I do agree that the benefits have been greatly decreased lately.

I guess it just sounds good to say you're partnered. In reality I don't notice a huge difference (if any) with the earnings from my current network and the earnings I made from Google Adsense before that. Your channel is a bit more protected though.

so when partnered you dont use your adsense account anymore? do you just unlink it with your account then? or how does that work? and then so your money goes to the network, then they give you your cut?

Essentially. The network link handles turning the Adsense off and your Adsense data disappears in Analytics. Network data starts and they pay you what they owe you after they get paid. Don't disconnect or cancel your Adsense though, just leave it be, the network handles the rest.

Yeah a network connects your account to their adsense and then pays you your % monthly ( usually starting in the 2nd month after you join).
