What do likes do for your channel?

I know that it's great if people thumbs up your video, but what exactly does it do for the video and your channel?

It's said that video ratings, whether likes or dislikes, supposedly help increase your video ranking. It's good engagement and it also makes you feel loved.

Likes (and dislikes) help your channel rating! And people, psychologically, are more inclined to like your content if they see an abundance of likes as opposed to a bunch of dislikes :)

It can share your video if they publicly display their likes, it can also share the video on Facebook and Twitter depending on their settings which can depending on their own audience size drive viewers your way.

I heard it brings world peace and can end world hunger.

From the YouTube FAQ:

"Q: Do likes, comments, shares, etc. factor into search ranking?

A: We've tested this in the past, however these factors are too easily gamed so they aren't reliable enough to use in ranking. However, the organic ripple effects of these actions may help with discoverability in other ways; for example, if someone "likes" your video, and their 1,000 subscribers see that activity in What to Watch, those 1,000 subscribers may decide to also watch that video."

well now the like-dislike ratio is visible on top of thumbnails in the suggested videos pane... not sure how i feel about it either.

Whut? I don't see it. Is this a new thing they're testing? I only see the length of the video displayed on the thumbnail.
