What can you get away with?

Introduction:
Hello everyone, I have some free time today, and it's been a long time since I've done a Youtube guide :). You all seemed to love the last 3, this one is about how much you can get away with, basically where are the limits of what Youtube will accept. I'm going to break this down into 3 sections: "Music", "Video", and "Community guidelines".

Music:
So as you all know, Youtube strictly says they disallow any copyrighted content that you don't own the rights to, but is this really true? Actually it's a great rule to follow, since if you don't know where the line goes, you might get taken down.

I would say that in this category specifically, just sticking to royalty free music could be a great advice. However remember if you get a copyright strike, all you have to do is go on for 6 months without recieving another one, and the first on dissapears.

Don't ever use big names for music, Youtube is horrendous at detecting electronic music, and therefor they have that disabled for partners. Unless you upload a dublicate of the actual song (meaning you upload the entire thing by itself) Youtube won't even detect your video, and even if they did it would be deemed ok.

There are rules for what you can upload, especially within music. Many of theese constabulary rules are, only there as a warning sign, let me demonstrate:
This is where the warning sign is:
--------------------------------------
And this is how far you can go:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A few finishing words for music: 8-16 bit remixes can also be used even if it's from big songs, game soundtracks don't ever get taken down either. If you see a notification on your video suggesting it might have copyright, make it unlisted immediately, and if the notification doesn't dissapear within a week, you have to take the video down.

Video:Allright one of the main topics of this thread, video content in your videos. I'm gonna split this up into 3 sections, 1 being video content from other Youtube videos, 2nd being video content that you have recorded in games and such, and 3rd being video footage that you have recorded in real life.

Video content from other Youtube videos:Can I use videos from other Youtube videos? Sure if you use less than 5 seconds it's not even against the rules, and if they have a Creative Commons license you can actually use as much as you want. My general gist is: if the video has less than 100.000 views, nobody's gonna file a complaint, and noone's going to care (People don't pursue legal action over theese things)

If it's however a big channel, with millions of subscribers, don't use their content, it's simply asking for the to get your channel taken down.

Game content:
As you all know, recently Nintendo has requested that all Nintendo game footage the monetization belongs to them. Looking aside from the fact that it's a d**k move, you might be wondering which game content you can upload safely?

First of all, all indie games are ok, noone there has enough money to pursue legal action towards a majority of videos. You want to look out for games that have known songs as soundtracks, for example I know there are games which use very copyrighted music, and you want to either stay away from thoose games, or turn the soundtrack off.

How do you know when to turn the soundtrack off? When you recognise the artist in a videogame. For example Call of Duty Black ops had an Eminem song. All the people who unlocked that and uploaded a video of it actually got taken down (at least for a while)

Video footage:
If your video is a prank video where people are involved, make sure to ask for permission before/after filming them. Technically anyone has the right to take a video down, simply because they're in it against their own will. It's a minority of people who would do this, but if there's someone who hates you in your video, they might do it simply because they hate you. (School, work, whatever)

Community guidelines:
How far can you go when it comes to community guidelines, well technically any nudity where genitals aren't shown is fine. However if you go too far with this, then your videos will be branded mature, and you need an 18+ account to watch the videos.

This might sound stupid, but I have fanservice in several of my thumbnails, since it gives more views (duh). Some people think this is dishonorable, personally I think the more the merrier.

Community guidelines is of course also other stuff than nudity, make sure that your profanity doesn't offend anyone particularly. I mean it's ok to offend everyone, but if you're only offending people from one country or religion, then your video might get taken down.

Ending words:
That's it folks, I hope you learned a little bit today, next time I'll cover the topic of in-depth interactions and collaborations.

These are good guidelines to follow. it's sad that YouTube never makes this very clear and people get strikes without knowing why. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, Nintendo hit me hard aha

I read an article somewhere stating that 30 seconds of any copyrighted music may be used without any problems and so far I've been sticking to that and I haven't gotten a single strike. You can use as much of that 30 seconds as you want, such as looping it, but you only have 30 seconds.

Not true, however Youtube has a hard time picking it up if it's below 30 seconds. It's against the rules even if it's 1 second.
