What are some good ways to find good small channels?

It is only very difficult to find smaller channels. All the tips listed here are good. Sometimes I type something I want to watch in the search bar and filter the search to videos uploaded today. I've actually found some pretty cool artists that way.

This forum is full of small YouTubers. You can check out the video section, there is tons of videos on there that you can watch.

One way that I've personally found some great smaller YouTubers is actually through the comments on my videos. Since I enjoy watching the same kind of content as I make myself, often other people who have just started making similar content will post on my videos. Sometimes they'll even ask if I can check out their channel - and as long as the channel is relevant to whatever the video was about and they didn't spam, I'll do just that. Found some really cool small channels this way

You can also go to YouTube and then up in the search bar, type "Small YouTuber Tag" and you will get a ton of videos from small YouTubers who have used that as a title for their video. You could also consider using the tag yourself in one of your upcoming videos so that you could be discovered in the same manner.
