Verified Names on YouTube?

Forgive me if I caught on to this too late, but I found something kind of interesting just now.

I was watching a Fine Bros. video, and right as I was about to click out, I noticed something strange next to their username- a little gray box. Curious, I moused over to it and it said "Verified Name." Apparently YouTube is verifying partner channels similarly to what twitter does.

Is this new or am I just too much of a slowpoke to notice it in time? Also, what are your thoughts?
 
Yep when you have a certain number of Google + followers (I believe), you can get a verified check next to your channel name. They recently started this a few weeks ago if i'm not mistaken. I personally think it's a great idea.
 
Yep , i know what u mean. how many followers ? i've tried filling out the application & they never accepted me to be a verified channel :(

It's something like 100k followers.. it's like getting a verified twitter account :)

I'm not sure, but i'm guessing very high. They are not going to give verified accounts to anyone, so that's why they didn't accept you. You don't have enough followers. I think I read somewhere that it's like 100k. I could be wrong though.

dam! :( but it's more for channels like TheFineBros , right ? lol :)
 
That seems very strange to me, but whatever works for them. I guess that will make people want to use google+ more maybe?
