  1. I've never bought subs nor do I ever intend to buy subs
  2. I know this is stupid, it's just a fun idea/theory that I wanted input on
  3. Please don't fill this with hate crap because "buying subs is bad," this isn't one of those topics.
  4. Never buy subs, its a HORRIBLE idea
Okay now that that is out of the way, I had a random thought/idea today! What if I went and bought 1,000,000 (one million) subscribers from sites like Fiverr and the like. Now, OBVIOUSLY, I would likely get banned to go from near 1,000 subs to over a million in less than 24hrs, but if I didn't they would all be inactive and not view right?

What if having that weight of that many subs suddenly made you trend on YouTube? What if that in turn, led to higher rankings, results, etc just from the weight of subscriber base? What if investing what would probably be around $1000-$5000 to get a million subs bought for your channel turned out to give you REAL traffic and BOAT LOADS of it due to the huge sub base?

Couple reasons why I consider this MAY work, provided the account isn't insta-banned:
  • Tags matter, but if you use a 3rd party tool to view tags on a lot of the major YouTubers' videos, you would be surprised to see they pretty much suck at tagging and only put a few general things like "PewDiePie, Pewds, Let's Play" (honestly try it, they have S**T for tags).
  • I believe a LOT of their weight is due to watch time, but also subscriber base.
  • Trending on YouTube may involve subscribers flocking to you. not JUST a lot of views in short period of time.
  • If you weren't a YouTuber, do you really look at how many views a video has compared to their subs? Most viewers don't I believe, so they wouldn't see this as an issue.
  • If your content is great but you just haven't been discovered, this may work!
I DON'T RECOMMEND ANYONE DOES THIS EVER! But, for fun, let's discuss?

Interesting theory, but also hard, or risky, to demonstrate

Yeah, I feel I would have to start a channel that is not in anyway associated with my own, spend $1000 or whatever the rate is for subs (no idea LOL) and see what happened.

This is exactly what music companies used to do. They'd buy subscribers and views in order to make it look as though everyone was enjoying the band and generate hype/buzz. YouTube clamped down on it and now, as you said, you get banned for doing it! Would be interesting too see what happened nowadays though!

Not that I doubt this couldn't/doesn't happen, but can you link any reference to that? Literally have been using YouTube since 2005 and have never heard that confirmed anywhere.

I can have a search however I learnt it from my University tutor who was part of record companies doing it at the time so it's from his experience. We discuss YouTube a lot since its the biggest music streaming platform in the world!

I doubt it would work. this post reflects only on one aspect of many youtube variables, the subscriber count. In my research ive seen that successful youtubers also have other things going for them.

And i am pretty sure youtube algorithm is affected by a variety of factors. Theyve already thought of ways people can game the system and how to prevent abuse. So it would make sense that they weigh different factors so one factor would not have too much influence.

If it were that easy then economically i think you would see a lot more channels on youtube that have followed that path and succeeded. Youtube would probably be flooded with channels that have suddenly grown and earned top spots without earning it. I dont see that, for the most part the big channels i see promoted seem to have earned it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. We don't even know whether the number of subs influences the ranking at all...

Right....which is why I said "What if" as in...what if that DOES have influence? Not sure what you don't understand.

I agree. I hold top rankings in quite a few keywords directly competing with YouTubers in the millions of subs when I have thousands, but its a fun though.

Also, speaking economically, I have no idea the going rate for subs but I would think 1 million would be fairly expensive for someone to invest not knowing if it would turn around and give a return on investment. $10,000 or so isn't chump change for most of us in the work force.

I'm not sure what you meant by trending. The trending tab or in general? I don't know how YT determines what's trending, if maybe a surge in subs is relevant, but other than that, a large sub count alone won't do much. I think the ranking score is rumoured to be 80% watch time.
