The realest question

I Love YTtalk
So basically, I've always wondered this but why is it so looked down upon to self promote? Now BEFORE YOU GO OMG EW SPAM LEMME EXPLAIN KK? so anyways..

As long as you don't do any of the following I think self promo is okay:
1) Don't just send out automated/spam messages. Ever. Like no.
2) Don't start a conversation off like that
3) Unless it's just come out, I would say to really divide up promo updates with regular/comedic updates.

And there's probably a bunch more but like those are off the top of my head. But self promo is really looked down upon and I don't really understand why. Everyone posts with the main goal of getting it seen so what's wrong with a little reminder in case someone didn't check their subscriptions in a while or something. Really confusing to me. What do you guys think?

EDIT: I had no idea where to place this post, so feel free to move it wherever is appropriate.

I feel really awkward about self promoting honestly, like on my Facebook I feel weird. I do it, but it just feels bizarre. I only do it once a week, but I feel that I should do it more often.

So elaborate lol like why does it make you feel awkward to self promote? :P I'm genuinely curious xD

Well, I think it's because I'm still in the refining process of my videos. They're getting a LOT better, but they're still not the kind of quality videos that I'd like them to be, or that my friends share (i.e Stuff on Buzzfeed). So when I share a video I sometimes feel as though it may not be something that would hold their attention. It's really just a psychological thing I need to get over I guess.

Also from personal experience I get a little frustrated when big YouTubers post the same exact links over and over and over, like Shane Dawson, he doesn't really change up his posts he just spams throughout the day. Once I can create content, like a behind the scenes video to keep things interesting, I think I'll feel more comfortable self promoting.

Sorry I wrote so much, I usually do that '-'

Ah yes, the self advertisement discussion, I also have mixed feelings about this, but I lean towards one more side than the other one.

Yeah, I agree with you totally, but there's still people who do exactly the same as you just stated, and when people realizes it... Boom! Massive hate on any kind of self advertisement itself.

But still, I mean that on places that you shouldn't post stuff, for example: an actual youtube video comments.

Let's take this comment as an example:"(XXX), You guys inspired me to make videos, and I almost hit 13 thousand subscribers!" (You can change XXX for Smosh, ShaneDawson, SkyDoesMinecraft, GoodMythicalMorning, PewDiePie, PrankVsPrank etc, I am actually quoting someone who actually did that on a lot of videos that famous youtubers posted on that same format). After a bit, people who had channels started to realize he actually succeded to get subscribers and joined the convo, BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT at the same time, people who realized what was happening started to come out and hate on any hint of self advertisement. (And now Smosh comments is becoming a war between useless spam thingies that we saw all the time, self advertisement and hate on the self advertisement)

^^^^ As you can see, Im kinda mad :V

Which takes me to this point here:

I'm kinda sad to say that the comment session on bigger youtube channels are just becoming a target for self advertisement and spam, and thats not what people really want to see there, I usually want to see on the comments a funny thing thats related to the video(Meaning that people won't really hate you if you're trying to be seen with something that actually relates to the video), and I won't be actually happy if I see something like "I wish I had as much subscribers as you guys" or... you know... Bob and his spam army.

Meaning: You shoudn't put stuff where you shoudn't (Man I took that long to get here '-'), if I see something on, let's say, youtuber's reddit thats self promoting (if it's in its correct place and follow the rules) then I'm totally fine with it, it's an incredibly legit self advertisement, I might even happily check you if you pull my interest (if it's in its correct place and follow the rules).

Maaaan, sorry again for this big reply, if anything isn't consistent at all, ignore it -3-, I'm sleepy.

Edit: Oh, an example of misplace self advertisement that we can relate to is you usual "Check my channel" introduction on YTtalk forum. It happens and we dont usually like it ;P

I think it's totally ok to promote your videos on social media (tweet it, post it on your facebook etc.), as long as you don't do that every freakin' minute :P. And I'm pretty sure most people have nothing against that.

However, I feel like when it comes to leaving self-promoting comments on other people's videos, that is not too ok. I guess it's because people are so fed up with everyone commenting things like that, plus most of the time it won't really help your channel too much - unless you want a bunch of hate and dead subscribers (that never engage with your content).

To be honest, when I get regular comments on my videos, I will almost always check out that person's channel and see who they are. But if I get a comment like "Nice video, check out my channel", I will 100% not even bother clicking that.

I promote myself on many social media sites, always finding new ways to promote myself. But I dont spam! I got to sites that allow you to past videos and ask for feedback on them.

I definitely agree with what a lot of you are saying about leaving self promoting comments on other's videos. That's always a bit disrespectful to me tbh.

I got one today, basically saying "Great video, Keep up the good work! I also do gaming videos, could you check my channel out and maybe subscribe? I subbed btw" If I get these sort of comments, they getting deleted!

Self promotion always feels strange to me.

Put it this way,
You learn and train martial arts for 15 long years and become quite skilled.
Then, people start calling you a Master.
HOWEVER, you can't go around calling yourself a Master.....
When other people call you it, that's when you know......

Does that make sense?
