The Difference Between A Fan, A Viewer, And A Subscriber

This was a great post. This is why I don't understand people who want sub4sub when they will never look at your channel, and you'll never look at theres!

Exactly, people's desperation to chase after a high sub count makes them do some really pointless things. If they understood the difference between subs and fans maybe they wouldn't make that mistake :) I'm glad you enjoyed the post!

Thank you :) I'm hoping people will realize that while all of these types of viewers matter, some are certainly more important than others, and they all fill different roles.
Lol way to go on raising awareness because everyone thinks that the number of subs you have are what really matters when its not lol

Someone mentioned recently that they judge the quality of a channel/video they're watching by the comments, instead of the view count or subscriber count. I think this is a really good way to tell if a channel has true fans, and not just random viewers, or inactive subscribers.

For instance I have almost 3.7k subs now, but I only get maybe 5 comments a video, sometimes not even that. I've been slacking at keeping my subscribers engaged and making them feel like they are a part of the channel, and it's showed. Something I need to work on a lot more, and part of the motivation for this post!

This is an awesome thread Shadey! I love the posts that are long but still interesting enough to keep my attention ^_^

With me, at least I don't usually look at how many views a video has or how many subscribers a person has before watching one of their videos... A lot of the time, even if a person only has 5 subscribers they tend to be pretty good videos, or at least of an equal quality to some people with a high number of subscribers.

This isn't a general rule! Of course, and I mean, I'm sure it's a lot easier to find a channel on youtube with 5 000 subs vs. a channel with 5 subs, but sometimes really great content just goes unnoticed because people don't want to/don't know how to/don't care to advertise their videos or make them popular. It's just that it's very easy to go unnoticed on youtube because before actually watching the video it's not easy to judge between what's good content and what isn't, so even if it did pop up on a related video somewhere, the chance that someone might watch it might still be low, because you could see the thumbnail and think 'oh it's just another cover of that song' or 'it's just another minecraft playthrough' and end up not clicking on it.

So I think what I was trying to say by rambling there was that I don't usually judge the quality of a channel or a video by the comments or view count or subscriber count until I've actually watched one of their videos... but I do tend to be biased as in by watching just one of their videos I'll judge their whole channel on that video, which I'm sure a lot of people do on youtube, where that one video decides whether you subscribe or not.
I guess it's definitely a good idea that youtube's adding those intro videos ^_^ so people can judge channels based on those instead of just a random latest video that might not be all that good and cause someone to lose interest when they would actually like other videos.

Sorry if I went off topic there! I just saw something I wanted to reply to and kept going on and on :D <3

- Omitted for space -

You're starting to ramble like I do! :p

I agree that judging any channel off of just a number is a bad thing to do, but I think a lot of people find themselves doing it whether consciously 0r sub-consciously. You are right that the quality of a video is dependent upon far more than the number of comments it has, but I think if you're talking about quality channels with a chance to be successful, numbers are large role too. As much as it would be fantastic for YouTube to be just a quality game, where people who make the best videos are the biggest on the site, it's just not true. You've gotta play the politics game and the numbers game in order to grow your channel.

Essentially the thread is concerning the growth and expansion of one's channel, not just the quality of their videos. I agree as well that the intro video will be a big thing for YouTube channels and if it is used correctly, I think it will add a lot to people's ability to show off what their channel really is right off the bat.

Thanks for the response :)
