Anyone have any tips on tagging videos, is there such a thing as over tagging?

Seems that on one of my channel that actually gets views the videos that I "under tag" gets more views than the videos I use a lot of tags.

For example, if I had a video of a barking dog and tagged it barking, dog I would get much more views than if I used multiple tags like barking, dog, k9, dogs, "dogs barking" "mean dogs" "scary dogs" pitbull, evil, dog,

I have seen many viral videos using only 1 or 2 tags and no description at all. Am I missing something here?

i don't know how the tags work but i have had poor results with a lot of tags and some good results as well!

I often read that you should use as many tags as possible, but maybe thats just people who want their results to do better... :O

Videos go viral because of sharing not because they're optimized for search. How high a video ranks in search these days is due to watch time so if you use two tags that explain the video perfectly people might watch the whole thing which will lead it to rank higher for those two terms. If you use 30 tags some might describe the video loosely leading to shorter watch times as people don't find exactly what they were searching for leading your video to rank lower. In general when you're big and have a chance of topping the search for a term you might wanna use only one or two tags to get yourself on a front page of a search term. But for most of us who are smaller I would recommend tagging as much as you can, anything related to your videos because unless you have a large audience you won't be topping any search terms anyway.

Hope this helped

i think these days its more a matter of luck and trusting people, having that one person who starts the share then the next and so on, tagging is more or less just gives you a bigger chance of getting that one person who will like you so much they have to share :)

I only put tags relevant and use more than just one word for a tag. I don't ever see a difference I guess like someone said it's luck that someone finds it and shares:).

As many tags as you want or however many YouTube allows, just don't go putting in anything that is not relevant to your video cos it will appear to the wrong audience and u may begin to get dislikes and it is also annoying when people try to get more views by putting names of big youtubers in their tags

I agree with everyone else. I have optimize my keywords plenty of times with very little success. I still do think its import to have optimized keywords because you do still get views but not as much as one would hope. use youtube keyword tool and try out some keywords and see how many times there are searched through.
