Starting channels - equipment =/= views

I've Got It
People that start channels seem to have the illusion that you need all the latest gear to get successful.

Just because you start a gaming channel, doesn't mean that your new capture card will get you famous or whatever.

Just because you want to vlog, doesn't mean that you should start by buying a 500$ camera and an apple computer.

Why don't some of these people just work with what they have? Record with some free software, film with your current webcam. You don't need to spend hundreds, thousands of dollars right of the bad to get going.

Sure, users prefer higher quality content but if you don't have the viewer base yet that tells you that your video or audio quality is low, you don't have a reason to spend that much money.

My mind is so.. puzzled when I see this

I remember a lot of youtubers who filmed using a 2 mp mobile camera :-P

That's what i'll do since it's all i have probably.

I tend to record using my "wooden laptop" my screen is half hanging off, it can't handle any of the latest games or any game within the past 3 years for that matter. I started recording using a free software then I asked for fraps off my parents for my birthday, I still manage to turn out 720p videos despite the difficulty in actually recording due to the lag.

Totally agree with you though, work with what you have, if I can manage with my terrible equipment then I'm sure others can too. I plan to buy a new computer within next year but this isn't because of youtube, simply because I'd like a new computer where the screen isn't hanging off and might snap off any day now :P

If you plan to either build or buy a desktop PC, Try to get one with a Nvidia card in it. GTX 650 or above. GTX 650+ cards have the ability to use an amazing piece of recording software for games called Shadowplay. I made a video about it on my channel. It lets you record with almost NONE FPS hit

Interesting, I will certainly need to consider this when I get one, it looks pretty decent.

On a side note, The audio quality wasn't the best in the video and it's something you could work on, there's a buzzing behind your talking, generally I find turning down the master volume for microphone will fix this, other than that the video was good :)

I am changing headsets soon enough. Trust me I am very aware of that :P

You don't need a fantastic camera to become popular, but it helps a lot. High quality cameras/mics give off the professional vibe. When I click on someone's video and it's filmed on something lame, it's almost a guarantee that it's crap.

Watch the old RayWilliamJohnson videos.. There were better cameras back then, but look where his room and laptop got him..

If you have money to spare, I don't see any downsides in buying good equipment :P
But as long as you can record 720p and don't record your voice through a potato, it will work fine.

I just blew about $1000 between a new camera and pc. (no mac for this guy) Thats without adding a tripod to the mix. All that, (other then the tripod) were upgrades for me. Next is possibly a external mic, I have a mic input on the side of the camera:)

But I do agree, you dont need fancy things to succeed.
