Something people need to know...

I enjoy it as a hobby, if it becomes something that others enjoy as much as I do, great! If not, I'll probably continue anyways because I enjoy the aspect and doing different editing and such, good practice that I can use outside of Youtube if needed.
You need to work hard and have good content for Youtube. It's like a business, but you have a lot more competition and the demand for good videos goes up, the more good content there already is. The standard for what defines a good video is raised, making it really tough for small Youtubers.

I think one of the aims of YouTube is to gain a good following (around the 1,000+) and a community of people. It's not all about getting a million of subs. It's gaining an audience.

i don't need to get to the top, half way would be good enuf. :p

luck does indeed play a part in everything in life, including and especially things like youtube. consider that it is almost pure chance that any one individual will catch your channel

hard work and great content will get ppl to come back, but only luck will get them there the first time. and the bigger you are the luckier you get

good luck everyone!

p.s. why do so many ppl around here say "good luck" in the intro forum?

It's not luck. It is called an algorithm. If you were to post a video on YouTube, say the greatest video ever created, a video that was so good people would cry and wet themselves at the same time. If you posted this video on YouTube and shared with nobody it would never get a single view...UNLESS someone searched for it. Now if the title of the video, something in the description, or something in the tags was very unique and no other video had this quality it could be seen, by a search that matched it exactly. But if the title, tags, and description match other videos, your video, the greatest video ever created, would return at the bottom. There it would remain, never to be seen (unless someone went to the last page).

If you share that video somewhere and someone watches it, YouTube's algorithm's carefully look for signs of success. A like, a comment, a dislike. If enough people watch the video, comment, like and dislike, YouTube's algorithm says, "we have a winner here" which roughly translates into "we can make money off this one". The video will begin climbing the ranks of other videos with similar titles, descriptions, and tags. If the video is good enough (cause yours is the best ever) it can top the charts on any word in the title tags and descriptions. YouTube will know it is relevant because they know the retention time. If you searched for X, and got a video on Y, you might click it and watch a few seconds then click off. But because your video is the best ever, they watch it all the way through, multiple times...and they share it.

Now the greatest video ever made has gone viral, its being shared and re-shared and watched and re-watched. It is out of YT's control..but since it is the greatest video ever made it makes the top lists. There is nothing to do with luck. It's the fact that it is the greatest video ever.

Now how YT decides to suggest videos is beyond me. Some of the places I've found my videos makes no sense whatsoever.

It's not luck. It is called an algorithm.

no amount of technology will insure a video gets viewed, shared or not. again, it's pure chance whether any one individual will decide to search according to the algo or whatever. you are leaving out the human element. are the chances good for one person, i suppose yes, but it's still all chance

ppl want to believe that hard work always pays off, unfortunately sometimes it doesn't. you need some luck

good luck to you!

Luck still has nothing to do with it. A person has to watch it and the content has to be good for it to be shared. A crappy video will never go viral.

let me put it another way... you can't force anyone to watch. even with a great video ppl have to arbitrarily (chance, luck) decide to do so. and for this great video to go viral many ppl have to arbitrarily decide to watch it. the creator might use various enticements but there is nothing in the world (incl algos) that will guarantee views

we are human...i.e., unpredictable. ergo, chance, luck etc

I guess if you put it that way there is some luck, but the video still has to be good. That is the ultimate point, then the algorithms take over.

You are right, It is certainly about making good videos, we have around 70 videos and the last few have been so much better than the first, Its a learning curve and the more you put into your channel, IE networking and promoting then the more you get out.
