Something awesome happened!

The Sauce
Hey everyone!
A month or two ago, I set one of my videos (this one, titled: "Boat on Fire! | Episode 1 | Garry's Mod: Sandbox | Featuring PizzaBreads") as a YouTube ad.

For those of you that don't know, YouTube allows you (for free) to set a video as an advertisement.
You can do this by going to 'Channel' within your dashboard, then going to Featured Content.

Just the other day, the video skyrocketed.
It went from 70 views to 36,212 views.

My more recent videos also had more views on them (2 to 3 times as many as they did previously).

I gained an astonishing 619 subscribers in one day.

At first, I was extremely skeptical, and I immediately thought I had been botted.

I use Google's archive feature to back up all my videos, and I had downloaded like 1/3 of them, because I seriously thought I might get shut down from what I thought was botting.

Then I took a look at the channels subscribed to me.
They all had different sub counts, and a good number of them had their own videos.
They were all unique channels.

Another thing:
I was getting a number of new, unique comments from people that were all different.
A few people commented on the video that received the huge boost, and they mentioned that it was one of the few YouTube Ads they had actually wanted to watch.

It was weird, and I didn't know what to make of this.
So I spoke to a friend of mine, who had a channel of his botted (someone did this to him, and he had to shut down his channel and move), and he said to look at my analytics and look at the watchtime.
If it was super short, then you KNOW it's probably a bot.

So I waited a few days for my analytics to update, and I was shocked when I found that the huge increase had been from one major source:
"YouTube Advertising"

There was another percentage that came from "Suggested Videos", as well.

So the story goes...
apparently YouTube Advertising works.
I highly suggest you put your best video up, and see what results you get.

:)

Interesting! I'll give it a try :)
I highly recommend it :)

Cool. Thanks for the tip!
You're welcome!

What do you mean with "YouTube Advertising"?
It means your video was set as an advertisement before another person's video.
YouTube allows you to set any video as an advertisement, and there's a small chance that it will actually become an ad on other YouTube videos.

From what I noticed from this is, if you have monetised you videos, the earnings are lowered
That is correct. Because your video IS an ad, it does not have Ads of its own, so you do not get a large monetary gain from this.
The big thing about this is that you can gain new subscribers, views on other videos, likes, and comments. It's more for exposure, which will help you gain more on the videos you monetize in the future.

wow this is crazy haha i need to try this
Go ahead. Hopefully it works for you!

so if im not mistaken , the video was set as an ad & you got no results for like a month or two , then it just happened out of nowhere ?

As for now I don't see any results different than usual. Maybe it'll come with time :)
Be patient, as it can take awhile for the advertisement to get shown.
The video of mine that ended up getting boosted was uploaded over 7 months ago, and added as a YouTube Ad 3 or 4 months ago. It was only a week or so ago that it actually got shown as an advertisement.

It was super random, but from what I understand, YouTube has a cue of all these submitted advertisements, and it takes them awhile to get through them all. Mine just so happened to get through the cue a week or so ago, and it was awesome. Give it some time, and you could see some good results.
