Shotgun Microphone Questions

Hello everyone, have a few questions about shotgun mics.

About 75% of my videos are shot with me talking behind the camera. So basically I am shooting a product and moving it around and talking about it behind the camera. For an example, here is a link:
(can't post links but YT profile is in sig)

Now the other 25% of the time I will be recording people talking in front, so I feel that I should just get a shotgun mic.

However from what I have read, Shotgun mics do not pick up audio from behind. Not sure the range you have to be but I am pretty much hovered over the camera when I shoot.

I don't want to spend a bunch of money and buy a shotgun plus lavalier mic..so just want to buy a shotgun mic. Will this work for what I am doing?

Thanks for the help and replies in advance.

Well if you are filming and you are behind the camera just face it towards you then when your filming people talking just turn it round and place it near them but out of shot :)

Hey dude - good question!

I have a Rode shotgun and it has improved my audio massively. Just remember to turn it around when speaking behind the mic and you're set.

By the way, awesome job on 33k subs!!

This dude is right rode have some of the best shotgun mics on the market for consumers

Thanks to you both for the help, info and compliments. It's greatly appreciated.

Just picked up the Canon XC15 which has an XLR mount for audio. Was thinking of the Rode NTG4+ but it's pretty pricy. Which Rode mics do you guys use? Would the NTG2 work?

Rode VMGO Video Mic GO Lightweight On-Camera Microphone Super-Cardio
works well for me. Buy a deadcat too if you are using it outside to stop wind noise

I'm a rode fan too, the ntg2 or 3 will do pretty well even if you dont turn it right at you, you can still get a decent audio, but of course its best to turn it around
