I see tons of people who do this, and for those people who actually get pretty popular from it (take LEON for example, a COD commentator who posts the whole "1 sub = bang your crush" kinda stuff on EVERY video out there) wind up having to disable ratings because they are hated so much.

The way I see it, it's either build up a loyal fan base from hard work (or sometimes luck), or build a 50/50 like/hate relationship with your viewers, which is not the right way to succeed.

Agreed man. I've watched enough YouTube to completely understand what you're talking about. And I just saw your comment on my video. Thanks so much for that. That made me feel good and motivates me to keep working hard at it. Appreciate it!

If you suspect that he is doing shady stuff to gain attention, I suspect that that his subs and view-counts are also questionable.

No, I'm pretty sure his subs and view counts are legit. The dude makes some pretty decent stuff. And he's getting all sorts of loyal followers from it. I just noticed the way he's promoting is very questionable. It's giving him amazing growth, but yeah, he's violating terms of service and it's just not a respectable way to accomplish things.

Happens out there in the everyday business world as well. I remember going on fiverr once (A website where you can sell your skills) and there is a whole category on there of people that make fake testimonial videos!

I clicked on the top page and she had a trailer with all of the fake testimonials she had done and her price list.

Its all around us to be fair but not something I would like to do, even if it got me results.

just wouldn't feel right. :/

So recently I noticed a kid with a new vlogging channel that has been self-promoting in a lot of the top travel vlogging channels. He makes a comment thanking the YouTuber for the inspiration to start his own channel, and then he logs onto the same three accounts every day and gives his own comment thumbs up and comments such as, "I was going to say stop spamming, but your content is really great! Keep it up!" and "New subscriber here! Amazing videos man!" To be fair, this kid's content is actually pretty decent, but I found myself feeling quite offended by this behavior. He's amassed over 1k subs now in just a couple weeks, and I feel like this strategy is a huge part of the reason.

What do you guys think? Is this type of self-promotion ethical? Is it even allowed within YouTube's terms of service?

I feel like this is the wrong way to do it, but another part of me can't help feeling maybe there is a bit of genius to it...:(

There's a guy called Greenraver who does this, puts a comment up on a popular video with about 130 bot comments saying how great his channel is. He's got over 40k subs though so must be working. Ultimately you'll get a lot of hate doing this though. I wonder why people would want to be traffic wardens, for example. The money can't be that good, compared to the hate.

Pretty shady way to try and get yourself noticed. Well done in getting 1K subs in a couple of weeks but yeah thats a real shady way of going about things.

As shady as it is the guy got to where he is and did that help? More than likley.

I personally wont be doing this because I would feel like I'm cheating myself aswell as my subs. I rather gain and earn them legitimately and build a fan base off the old school way of doing things.

Yeah it might take longer but in my eyes worth it and in my opinion better than being a shady cheat and liking your own stuff.
