Retention question

Retention is a weird one. It can show you that if a video is getting low retention you can see where people start losing interest, it's not weird for you to drop 10-20% in the first few seconds, but if it keeps ramping off you can tell that people could be getting bored really quick or there is something that is scaring them off.

What is a good retention time? Im at 318 subs so would it not matter at that point?
Retention does matter. If your video has low retention then it wont show up on search, and won't be recommended to viewers. If your average retention on your channel is poor then the same will happen to your other videos, so it very much does matter.

Our retention is 2:14 for last month which is 29% which I feel is terrible

Mine is I believe 1:33. How could I raise that?

The retention % is much more important over the retention time. It's easier to get a 1 minute average retention time in a 1 hour video than a 1 minute video, because to get 1 minute average retention in a 1 minute video, 100% of people need to watch the entire video, which is impossible. Does that make sense?

Couple of tricks would be to:

1.Reduce your video duration, as that means people will more likely watch your entire video. TBH I'm always against new channels making videos more than a few minutes long, since... you have no fanbase therefore people are much less likely to watch your entire video.

2. Each part of the video needs to be engaging and interesting. A lot of people make long intros and have long bland sections in videos and I find myself closing videos before the intro is even over, or just skipping it (both hurt retention rate).

You should be aiming for a minimum of 30% retention rate. Any lower means you really have a problem with your content. 40%+ is ideal, TBH.

So 29 isn't terrible but also not good?
