Hello!

I am a Professional Video Editor and over the last two years I have made videos for some amazing companies, including BP, British Gas, Centre Parcs, Wicks, Sky Broadcasting to name a few :) Not trying to showboat but prove that I know what I am talking about and can give some valid advice.

I have worked on many different type and size projects and I want to know if anyone has any questions about cameras or video editing or anything like that?

Post away and I will try my best to answer as best as I can :)

Hi!

I would like to get into video production as a career, more the editing side as I really enjoy it. Can you give me some advice about how I would get into that sort of area?

Thanks,
Evan Ricketts.

Hi Evan,

Thanks for getting in touch.

First of all do something for free, I started by doing a trade. I got my dad to spend £200 buying Final Cut Pro X for me, and in return I converted all his videos from VHS to DVD :) That way I learnt about the programme, Its all on YouTube really :) but there is some great courses out there. Just get stuck in.

Two questions, have you tried editing videos before?

What kind of Video Editing do you want to do? TV, films? Youtube?

Thanks and il answer in more detail if you can answer these questions :)

Hi Tom,

Well I started making YouTube videos about 6 years ago when I was 12, and edited on movie maker of course, I then years later made gaming videos and would edit these on Sony Vegas 12. I learnt how to use that by experimenting and videos and after a while I got pretty good at using it, I was able to use it's functions as and how I wanted. After recently purchasing a second hand MacBook Pro, I now use Final Cut Pro, and 4 months on I'm still learning and improving which I like, so that's my editing experience really, 6 years of experimenting and learning. :)

In all honesty, I'd be happy to get into editing in any form, but I do feel like editing for a YouTuber would be more fun because I'd have more creative freedom in a sense with what I could create if that makes sense.

Evan :)

Hi Evan, :) thanks for the reply. So you clearly know the basics of video editing :) I was in your position previously.

I have looked at your videos, and I'm SOOOOOOOO relieved to see that you have made Audio a priority :) So many people think its all about the visuals and forget about the audio. Audio is so important and I am so I'm glad you did a great job with that!

I see that you have 3 options

1. Go to film school! If possible I would definitely, recommend this as you will get some amazing coaching :) (I didn't do this because I already had a degree in Business so couldn't do a second degree, but i think it has worked out for the best) Also you will made an amazing showreel that you can show to people and get a job off the back of that.

2. If you don't want to study more then try and get an internship at a video editing company, just do as much as you can just to learn and get experience (I did this when I first started). You will work for free for a period of time, so basically call, email or anyway possible get in touch with as many Video Production companies as possible. Definitely Call, as calling is so much more powerful than an email, (people get emails all the time and are too busy to do anything with them!) once you are on the phone, tell them you are looking for some editing experience and you are willing to work for free to start and they should jump at the chance. Show them your YouTube videos and say you are looking to grow and develop. I did this and it worked very well for me :) I worked for free for 3 months, then eventually got a paid job filming and editing! You will learn Final Cut Pro or Premier Pro or other professional tools that each company has and that is so important in this industry. I have a job now working 3 days a week editing on Final Cut Pro X It's fast, powerful and we edit some great 4k videos all the time with that.

3. Self learn (I did this as well) but I agree with you, editing YouTube videos are great as you have full control, no clients telling you want they want or restrictions on what you have to do. I did this loads, and if you can learn, grow and get a good presence on YouTube then people will notice you and you may start getting hired for jobs.

I know it was long but I hope this is helpful for you and keep learning and remember, most people do this job because they are passionate about Film, TV or other videos they have seen so stay passionate :)

If you would give one advice that suppose to help any youtuber make better videos - what would it be?
Very Good question, I have had a look at your channel, Audio is Good, Visually you clearly are using a decent camera as you are getting some nice depth of field :) Its hard to give one piece of advice but make something you are passionate about :) And never give up, keep learning and growing :) (cheesy but thats how I live my life)
