¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Google video platform will use non-skippable adverts as default from next week
- Previously, only specific channels could make viewers watch non-skippable ads
- YouTube says creators of videos are likely to earn more revenue as a result
YouTube will now include more non-skippable adverts across its website and apps.
The Google-owned video platform will use non-skippable adverts as the default for all video channels in a bid to generate more revenue.
YouTube confirmed all channels with the ability to monetise content will start to see non-skippable advertisements playing before their videos from next week.
Previously, YouTube allowed viewers to hit a 'Skip Ad' button that would appear after watching the first five seconds of a pre-roll advertisement.
Until now, only specific channels could deploy non-skippable ads to their videos.
The changes were announced in a video shared by YouTube's official Creator Insider channel, which is used to share the latest technical developments to video creators.
According to YouTube, the move to make non-skippable advertisements the default on the website and mobile app will increase revenue for creators.
This is because advertisers need to pay more for non-skippable content.
Since the revenue generated by these advertisements is split between the channels that create the content and YouTube itself, the Google-owned company is also set to make more money from the new default.
In a video entitled 'Want to earn more money from ad revenue?', the San Bruno-based firm announced the change to those enrolled in its YouTube Partners scheme.
"The [change] is the ability to turn on non-skippable ads for your videos,' the spokesperson said in the video.
'In the past it's been something that's only been available to a select few partners.
'In about a week from now we're going to start rolling it out to everyone who's in the YouTube partner programme.'
Skippable video ads, which can be included before, during, or at the end of the video, allow viewers to skip the advertisement after five seconds.
Non-skippable video ads must be watched before the video can be viewed.
