NON-skippable ads available for ALL monetized channels

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • Google video platform will use non-skippable adverts as default from next week
  • Previously, only specific channels could make viewers watch non-skippable ads
  • YouTube says creators of videos are likely to earn more revenue as a result

YouTube will now include more non-skippable adverts across its website and apps.

The Google-owned video platform will use non-skippable adverts as the default for all video channels in a bid to generate more revenue.

YouTube confirmed all channels with the ability to monetise content will start to see non-skippable advertisements playing before their videos from next week.

Previously, YouTube allowed viewers to hit a 'Skip Ad' button that would appear after watching the first five seconds of a pre-roll advertisement.

Until now, only specific channels could deploy non-skippable ads to their videos.

The changes were announced in a video shared by YouTube's official Creator Insider channel, which is used to share the latest technical developments to video creators.

According to YouTube, the move to make non-skippable advertisements the default on the website and mobile app will increase revenue for creators.

This is because advertisers need to pay more for non-skippable content.

Since the revenue generated by these advertisements is split between the channels that create the content and YouTube itself, the Google-owned company is also set to make more money from the new default.

In a video entitled 'Want to earn more money from ad revenue?', the San Bruno-based firm announced the change to those enrolled in its YouTube Partners scheme.

"The [change] is the ability to turn on non-skippable ads for your videos,' the spokesperson said in the video.

'In the past it's been something that's only been available to a select few partners.

'In about a week from now we're going to start rolling it out to everyone who's in the YouTube partner programme.'

Skippable video ads, which can be included before, during, or at the end of the video, allow viewers to skip the advertisement after five seconds.

Non-skippable video ads must be watched before the video can be viewed.

This has to be good for YouTube creators. Thoughts?

all ads are skippable via the X top right or red dot top left on mac. I guess people will vote with their feet. I'm in favour of creators getting something back for their effort. I'm not in favour of idiots who abuse the system by putting like 15 ads in 10 minutes footage but thats something different i guess.

I think people are used to non skippable ads by now so I can't see it doing any harm.
On a side note, it's annoying the life out of me now that Facebook have started playing ads half way through a video. Makes me scroll away from it.

I dont mind either way but I assume the non skippable must have a maximum length? Im guessing 30 seconds?
Ive noticed some ads run for many minutes - No one is sticking around for those..

If served an non skippable ad that is longer than 15 seconds I will reload the video until I get one with a sane number. I think it will move people into using ad blocker more and more if long non skippable ads are served. If I had any control over the ads shown on my content it would be skippable long ads, non skippable >15 second ads at the beginning and end and 5 second or pop up ads in the body of the video. I place an ad before, after and two in the body if it is a 10 minute video, or 3 if it's 15 minutes. Not all ads are shown anyway, but since I started doing that my revenue has gone up which helps me purchase things for the channel down the line. People don't seem to mind, because they know it supports the creator. I have seen people load up a 10 minute video with 15 ads though... And they all would have played too. I honestly think YouTube should implement my rationale. 3 minutes in between ads. That way you could only put 4 ads in a 10 minute video like I do. one at the beginning, one at the end, and then two in the body of the video. No matter what you do, you won't be able to add a 3rd one unless your content is 12 minutes long. And then not a 4th until your content is 15 and so on and so on. I find that the people who load up their content with ads do so without regard where they put them. They cut off their sentences or interrupt a point they were trying to make. I attempt to put them in a dead zone, that zone where I go from one point or scene to another.

Thanks for the heads up! Our newest channel had been too small to qualify for long nonskippables but when I checked yesterday it was there as an option, so I turned it on for every video.

When we first turned on long nonskippables in 2015 for our main channel we saw a notable increase in revenue and no significant impact to viewer numbers or watch time, so in our case this was a no-brainer. It could be that children are more tolerant of ads than adults.

YouTube is expanding non-skippable ads on its platform. Today, the company announced that all creators who can already monetize content on YouTube will soon be able to turn on non-skippable ads on all videos. The change is rolling out next week and eligible creators will get a notification in their dashboard.

Advertisers usually pay creators more for non-skippable ads, so this could be a way for YouTubers to incentivize creators to stick around on its platform and produce more content, with each ad sale earning the Google-owned company a cut. If a creator turns on non-skippable ads, even previously published videos on their channel will be able to make use of them.

would it b a dumass move for the creator to turn on non-skippable ads? 'x' and 'back' button will still work. mayb loose a majority of potential views? youtube may be giving up a big usp over traditional media?

I think this is really great for content creators. I seen an option for noun skipable ads, but I didn’t use that feature because I was afraid that it might make my viewers click off of my videos because I’m still a small YouTuber. I might use that option if I’m a bigger YouTuber but I right now it doesn’t matter for me because I don’t make much off of ad revue anyways.
