Super Poster
Just bought myself my first DSLR! I got a Canon T5i!

I know nothing about cameras, or how they work, or how to take pretty pictures.. but I'm excited to learn!

Any tips? Tricks? Good tutorials? Advice?

How did you learn to transition to DSLR land? Have you transitioned? What do you film with?

Hi

Very nice! I have a canon rebel t3i (because I'm cheap) and I'm still not totally used to it. It has been hard for me to adjust properly as I'm in front of the camera and don't have anyone to help me. I've started putting a tennis racket on a chair where I'm going to stand and then manually focusing it on my face that way. Whatever works lol. I think the issue with me is that I have a lens that does not focus well. :/

I'm not sure if the t5i improved this or not (probably not), but the camera mic is awful so you might want to record using another mic.

Always shoot manual. Learn about lenses and which to get. If you bought the 'kit lens' with your camera, know that it's not that great. Prime lenses are better for video than zooms. But there are also really great zooms out there. Put Magic Latern on your camera if you can. Use technicolor or Cinestyle picture profiles if you know how to color correct. Learn about the Exposure Triangle (ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed). Manual White Balance is a must if you're not a daily vlogger. Learn about Depth of Field and how to achieve it.

I have a 5i as well, and I absolutely love it! I've begun to use it when filming, and it gives me much better quality than what I was using before. I would recommend watching a few videos explaining the basics of photography, because you will learn a lot about how to use the camera and get it to do what you want it to do. Also, it is a good idea to invest in a UV filter. They go over your lens and protect it, and cost much less ($7) to replace than your entire lens.
