Need video compression advice

I've Got It
First of all, hi everyone.

I need help finding a way to compress my files into smaller file sizes. When I first started uploading videos, I exported them directly to my movies file from the recording software *Elgato*. Now I'm editing in an intro as well as doing various editing here and there using iMovie.

I do all of this on my Mac in iMovie which is easy and efficient for me. The only problem is that when I export the video the file size is too big. Unless this is normal, there's no way a 10-15 minute video should be 5-6 gbs and take 6 HOURS to upload!

When uploading directly from my recording software *Elgato* the upload takes about an hour tops and less for smaller vids. Now it's taking an eternity. I try using H.264 to compress my video but alas to no success.

I wanted to ask you guys if you know of any tips, advice, or programs you can inform me of that'll help reduce the painstaking task of watching a video take 400 minutes to upload...

1. What Mbps are you recording on the Elgato software? If it's too high then you should reduce it so the file size of your recording isn't too big
2. Have you checked your export settings on iMovie? Maybe you're exporting in the wrong settings

I record with FRAPS at 1080p, and about 1 hour worth of uncompressed footage is about 450 GB, once i edit with Adobe Premiere Pro and export it as h.264 i get about 7-8GB file. So you seem to be doing something wrong since for me 11 min 1080P video is only about 150mb. So what is your original resolution and frame rate, and what are your export settings(since the carrier used for compression is not the only thing that plays a role in the file size)

Original res is 1280x720 and the frame rate is normally 30 according to Elgato fps. Export settings are:

Compression: H.264
Quality: Best
Key frame rate: 24 fps
Frame Recordings: yes
Encoding mode: multi-pass
Dimensions 1280x720

Sound: Format: AAC
Sample rate: 48,000 kHz
Stereo
Bit rate: 160 kps

Re-encoding it to a 24FPS actually ads size so change the frame rate to 30fps, and for the quality drop it down to one below that(it wont really matter since its 720P)

Well I should say that it records at the current fps but there's a setting I left unchanged which was Key FPS and kept it at 24. As for quality I'll do that. If these settings don't work then what would you suggest next? I'd go right ahead to try this out, however my other 6 hour upload ;_; is more than halfway done so I didn't want to cancel it.[DOUBLEPOST=1375308382,1375308314][/DOUBLEPOST]

I can only check the Mbps for livestreaming which I'm not doing.

Nope, if you click on this tool button Screen Shot 2013-09-22 at 11.25.55 PM.png then this screen will pop up

Use the slider on "Quality" to decrease the Mbps you are recording at. 12-15 is good enough.

Whoops didn't see that due to my elgato being unplugged. Yeah, I normally go all the way up to best with the elgato, but like I said, this didn't become a problem until I started editing/exporting from iMovie. When I go from elgato- Youtube or either movies the file sizes aren't that big.

You really shouldn't use best. Even if you put the quality at the lowest, the quality still turns out amazing. Just put it to 12-15 Mbps and it will make a difference. You'll want to do this in the future if you're using a different editing program. Other than that, you can try uploading to YT through iMovie, stick with uploading through the Elgato software or just invest in a new editing program if you want :)

I guess you're right. I just wish I could use iMovie since it's easy to use ;_; oh well, give and take I guess. Thank you :)[DOUBLEPOST=1375312102,1375311934][/DOUBLEPOST]
